[another] TR from the Lakes
I've just done another trip to the Lakes. This time though I've been
brave and taken my camping gear, especially since I now don't have a
job and need to save the cash. In no particular order here we go:
Sca Fell.
I great day out , seems like a bit of nice weather draws the crowds
from the wood work. A very memorable day, starting from Seathwaite and
following the crowd up to Englands highest peak. After having tea in a
quiet spot on the summit ( over looking Mickeldoor and Wast water ) I
headed back, via those two crags ( you know the ones I'm on about )
and had another cup of tea on the peak of Great End, whilst the crowds
vanished. A nice jaunt back to the car and a bit of photagraphy
finished the day in some realtive peace and quiet.
Blencathra ( or Saddle Back )
A short drive from the camp site and another great day , not too misty
yet no sun shine . Since I'm in the business of peak bagging ( let's
be honest ) I ticked off Mungrisdale Common ( as per the Nutalls
route ) and actually was quite impressed by the views toward Skiddaw
from here.
Great Gable
I did this walk on /yet anoter/ clear day during my stay in the Lakes.
I went up via Seathwaite and forgot to bag Base Brown ( again ) . I
took a detour on the way back via Haystacks ( as busy as Gable ) and
descended via Raven Crag back to Seathwaite ( not a particularly
advisable route but I've done the the Honister walk around last time
and it took /ages/ A great day weather wise but again , so busy !
Pillar , Kirk Fell loop
Another Nutalls walk, from Wasdale ( which was a long drive from the
Keswick campsite ) I started off toward Looking Stead. The mountains
on my route were all in mist but to my right Kirk fell was clear, so I
decided it worth a detour. The view of Great Gable from Kirk fell was
great, however the path back down to Black Sail path is adventerous,
as was the high level route to Pillar. Too misty to bother with
Steeple, so saved that for another day.
Also did:
Wetherlam, with out getting lost on the descent, HV via Striding Edge
( and Fairfield and St Sunday Crag back to Patterdale ;-) )) in
perfect vis. ( yippee) except the crowds of course.
A few other low fells on the misty-er days. Looking forward to a bit
more camping before the years out. I've invested in a bigger tent and
a proper camping stove.
For a first time camper I actually did not get too cold, it was warmer
in my down bag on the coldest night ( probably about 1C ) since the
air was so much drier. Next up for me is another trip to an all year
round campsite and/ or some wild camping. I must be well on my way to
100% Wainwright completion now ;-)

Sorry about the loss of job ......... or was it voluntary? I retired early
18 months ago, and love being able to get out walking whenever I want.
Also, being able to walk anyday I can pick the better days when the weather
is more favourable, and use the 'poorer' days to do the houshold chores. A
task I also took on as my wife Clare still works.

We were in the Lakes for a couple of weeks just after the school term had
started, and the place was awash with people. Don't they all have jobs!

Being down the path to Black Sail Pass and it is a rather 'interesting'
descent.
Back in the Lakes for a week from 7 Nov, and on Great Gable for the
Remembrance Day service; here's looking for some good weather!
