Mynydd Du, Bannau Sir Gaer Scramble Route?
Hello

On a recent expedition to Mynydd Du in the Brecon Beacons we summitted
Bannau Sir Gaer. Along this redge there appears to be a couple of
scrambe routes up some gullies from the lake.

Does anyone know if these are scramble routes and if so what grade are
they?

Please see my picture for more detail:
http://cid-2920e180670cbd36.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Mountain%20Routes

Also and purely for interest this is a picture journal of the above
expedition:

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Regards

Adrian

I don't think they're "official" routes, but they look quite doable to me.
Bear in mind of course (as I'm sure you know) that old red sandstone is very
loose stuff, not ideal for scrambling, so obviously care is required.

I've just posted a few pics to show more clearly what these routes look
like:

This is the col between Cwar-du-bach and Waun Lefrith. This is basically
just a scree filled gully, doesn't look much fun to me.

Here's the gully between Cwar-du-bach and Cwar-du-mawr (on the right). Now
this looks much more interesting. Glastir y Picws is on the left.

Glastir y Picws, between Picws Du and Cwar-du-mawr. You didn't suggest this,
but this looks doable as well. There's a few different lines you could take
up this.

What was your route? The end is fairly obvious but not the start.

Hi Paul

This was a great answer, thank you. Some of those routes look very
doable, and thanks for those photo's, these were really quite
helpful.

I really fancy giving one of these ago, but am a tad nervous, as I
have not heard or read anyone else doing these routes. I have googled
them, but stil no luck. Guess I shall have to think abou this one over
a glass of my finest malt!

With reference to the start of the route. We started and finished at
Glyntawe, near the Shire Horse Centre. See image below of my GPS track
log:

Thanks again!

Once saw a chap ascending this gully. Looked quite a daunting task (for
me). I was walking back down the track to the car park and had gone
about half way and looked back to see a tiny speck about half way up the
gully. he didn't 'arf look small - I hope he made it.
