EU national, speed cam?
What happens if, an EU national with a hire car trips a speed camera.
Presumably nothing legally?
But surely the hire company will get the ticket as the keeper of the
vehicle - would they be likely to bill the driver for the administration
of dealing with the court?

They can get a private company to write to you and ask you nicely to pay.
Or they can wait until you return to their country then hit you with the
legal consequences of failure to pay.

ITYF you explicitly agreed to the hire company taking the fine & costs
off your plastic.

Yup, and each time you sign a nice celrk explains that to you and points
to the relevant clause. So that you have no excuses at all.

Three years ago I was on a California tour and, when driving over the Golden
Gate Bridge into San Francisco, realised that I was in a lane for a
'Fastrak' only booth. There are no advanced warnings of which lane to get
into (and 'driving' over the bridge again in Google Earth Street View
confirms that). It was morning rush-hour and traffic was nose-to-tail all
the way up to the booths. The Fastrak only lanes (which I was in) were
moving quite fast, whereas the pay booth lanes were stationary. There was no
way I could get across into a pay lane without causing chaos, and had little
choice but to drive on through the Fastrak booth. Not having a transponder,
a photo was taken of the rear of the Cadillac I was driving. A month after I
got home I got a letter from Alamo advising me that they had deducted the
fine from my credit card ($30 if my memory serves me correctly).

Compare and contrast with the fine if caught driving on the London
Chiswick M4 bus lane.

Interesting.
Its free to drive over the Golden Gate Bridge the other direction isn't
it. I did it a couple of years ago.
Actually I found this article a second ago. Which seems to indicate
that drivers from the EU would have to pay like we would if we did the
same in their country.

Digressing; an interesting footnote at the bottom
of that page:
A spokesman for the Association of British
Drivers, Brian Gregory, told TravelMail: This is
part of the continuing jihad against drivers. The
legislation doesnt address the problem. Speed
isnt the problem, its bad driving.
Speeding fines are a cash cow for the government.
Theyre just another way of squeezing money out of
motorists. Were interested in seeing road safety
improved not just bolstering the Chancellors
coffers.
