Can you cut a piece off to play with? See how it acts under the tap - if it absorbs water which can be squeezed out it is unlikely to dry out. If it doesn't absorb water, any dampness that you have should just be on the surface - but beware that you don't know what has already run around the outside and where it has ended up.
