77 year old jailed for 13 years!
"A grandmother has been jailed for 13 years for smuggling £1 million worth
of cocaine into the UK in her mobility vehicle. Judge Adele Williams said
Ambrozine Heron, 77, was a "willing participant" in the crime"

Can I just ask, wouldn't she be better off appealing and having the sentence
reduced to life imprisonment?

I must suggest it my grandparents, be cheaper than a nursing home? Might
even get more visitors!

Does anyone recall a chap in the US committing a robbery so he could be sent
to jail for long enough to get his pension?

No. According to http://www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/theme_population/Interim_Life/ILTUK0406Reg.xls
a 77 year old woman had a 10 year life expectancy in 2004-6 (and it's
probably got better).

A 13 year jail term suggests 6.5 years in jail before release on
parole (assuming no early release for overcrowding). She has a much
better than 50/50 chance of being released.

(The above is simplistic, in that it doesn't allow for poorer life
expectancy in jail.)

The main point of course is that that anybody has a better than zero
chance of surviving 13 years, so a 13 year jail term is always better
than a life sentence with a whole-life tarif. (Obviously of course, a
life sentence with a one year tarif would probably be better still for
the woman, but that is hardly likely.)

IIUC, the usual routine is that she will arrive at prison and be
medically assessed. At which point the prison will determine that it
doesn't have suitable facilities.

A few weeks in the hospital ward then back home on a tag.

Excellent argumentation Martin. I can't help feeling we are all
missing the point! I wonder if she had previous?

70-year old habitual criminal is before the court yet again for some fairly
serious offence.

Judge sentences him to 14 years.

Defendant says '14 years?! at my time of life I can't do 14 years!'

Judge replies 'well, just do as much as you can.'

She has the unfortunate previous form of being born in Jamaica, which
is usually a grave disadvantage when in comes to sentencing, despite
the absurd complaints of the fascists that white men are discriminated
against.

Initally she'll have gone to Holloway or Bronzefield for assessment
then she'll be transferred to another prison. I don't have a list of
female establishments to hand but there will probably be one with
facilities for elderly prisoners.

If she was he it owuld have been HMP Wymott which is dedicated to
older prisoners.

Yup, it could have been be pure prejudice and the facts that she plead
guilty to importing 16kg of cocaine and had made 14 previous one-day trips
to Holland during the previous year were never even considered relevant.

I have just heard that one of my neighbours, who is in his early 80's, has
just lost his father, who was well over 100.
