Village vigilante fined after attack
Village vigilante fined after attack
Oct 10 2008 by Les Stewart, Perthshire Advertiser Friday
A PERTHSHIRE couple turned vigilante after hearing reports that a
paedophile was on the prowl in their village.
Perth Sheriff Court was told that tensions were running high after
two youngsters were said to have been sexually molested in Stanley.
Initially, Pamela Cameron (27) and 38-year-old Paul Thomas, of Murray
Place, Stanley, contacted the police.
But after they were told that the forces Child Protection Unit
wouldnt be available until the following week, they took the law into
their own hands.
The pair then attacked the parents of a teenager who was suspected of
carrying out the abuse.
Thomas dragged a man by the hair from his vehicle in Murray Place on
June 29, pulled him to the ground and then punched him, causing
bruising to his face.
And Cameron laid into his partner after shouting and swearing and
repeatedly banging with her fist on the car she was in.
The accused repeatedly punched the woman on the head and body, causing
swelling to her face.
Part of the charge which alleged that Cameron had used a hammer in the
attack was deleted.
Not guilty pleas were also accepted to further charges of smashing the
window of a house in Stanley and spraying beasts out on the door
and denting and scoring the panels of a van were accepted by the
prosecution.
Depute fiscal Stuart Richardson said that an allegation had been made
to the police that a local boy had been the victim of some sort of
sexual abuse and that the teenage son of one of the victims was
allegedly responsible.
Solicitor Rosie Scott said that another allegation had been made that
a second younger boy had also been abused and they went to the police
station on the Friday.
Over the course of the weekend they heard that other things had
happened and Ms Cameron became increasingly anxious.
She went back to the police and expressed her concerns and fears for
other children, added Mrs Scott.
She was told, however, that the Child Protection Unit wouldnt be
available until the following week.
They are both aware they should not have taken matters into their own
hands.
They were trying to do everything properly.
There were very exceptional and unusual circumstances which caused
them to behave in this manner.
The situation arose against a highly-charged and emotional
background.
Thomas was fined £750 and Cameron was ordered to carry out 150 hours
of community service.
Imposing the penalties, Sheriff Lindsay Foulis said: There may have
been a highly-charged atmosphere but people cannot behave in this
manner.
It may be that any allegations come before a Childrens Panel, maybe
before a court, but these are matters for the appropriate authority to
deal with and its simply not good enough for members of the public to
act in the manner you have accepted you did on the day in question.
If that occurs, quite simply orderly conduct in society starts to
unravel.

Nah. Chisels are far more interesting and less messy. In these days of
global warming and the credit crunch we must think carefully about how to
kill sex offenders. The carbon footprint of burning is eyewatering, but not
as eyewatering as having a chisel stuck in you.

What gets me is that somebody with a collection of child underwear adverts
on their computer is treated as more of an evil bastard than, for example,
that footballer who killed 2 children and seriously injured their father
when driving pissed out of his head.

You've got a good point there. Ditto anything involving Class C drugs.

A pedo meter to measure levels of pedophilia in strangers, and a built
in alarm to set off when it detects one. Anyone who hears the alarm
could then rush in with a bat and deal with whichever adult male is
closest to the child when they arrive.
