THE man who was injured after an overnight petrol and paint bomb
attack on a house in Ballyclare is a convicted paedophile, it has been
revealed.

Ronnie Smyth was treated for a burn injury to his hand and cuts
following the incident in the Clare Heights area of the town.

Smyth, who ran a newsagents shop in Ballyclare, recently pleaded
guilty to seven counts of gross indecency involving an eight-year-old
child.

A number of windows were broken at the property and damage was
sustained in the living room and hall of the house.

A police spokesperson confirmed a 19-year-old and a 20-year-old man
had been arrested in connection with the attack and were assisting
police with their inquiries.

Alliance leader David Ford described the incident as "sickening".

"Attacks such as this achieve absolutely nothing except damaging the
confidence of the whole community," the South Antrim MLA said.

"What sort of person would commit a thoughtless act like this? I would
urge anybody with information about this attack to contact police so
the thugs involved can be taken off our streets."
