Quite possibly.... there's a lamppost next to Churchill's status.

Don't... I used to work with a woman who swore that Charlie Kray was a
lovely fella and used to clean the old peoples windows for them. Honest!
As for Cherie... I think she was pitching a bit low. I half expected her
to say Tone was 'up there' with God. We wish... ;-))

The comparison between Churchill and Blair does have a certain
validity : Churchill spent nine months in an American womb while Blair
spent ten years up an American arsehole.

I think Blair will easily beat Churchill, provided we judge him on his
personal greed, and his role in speading death and mutilation to
millions of people without any justification for doing so apart from
ambition.
Cherie Bliar will be remebered as a moral accomplice and as someone
who benefitted from the spoils of her man's greed. She and he are
busy trying to face lift their image to change the world's opinion of
them. History will lift the veil on the relgious cover-up and the
surreal, delusional world of Tont Bliar. It may also finally reveal
the inconguence of their lives and the near fatal effect that their
'madness' had on their children. His was the greatest heist ever
pulled off by an ambitious politician. It was always a plan to
transform his status to multi-millionaire by placing his personal
ambitions above Britain's interests by becoming a working 'agent' for
America - fully in the knowledge that the Americans would feather his
nest forever after. Not exactly Churchill is it?

Maybe we should look at Blair's role in our current financial
problems. Although we have all been happy to let Brown carry the can,
we should also remember that Blair was the PM through the years of
'boom' and that he evntually handed over the reins to an eager Brown,
just in time to miss the 'bust'.

Blair is equally blameworthy but it was Brown who was the Chancellor who
borrowed and spent with no thought of preparations for a rainy day. He
forgot the parables he must have learnt as a kid and if prudence really
was by his side he did not listen because she would surely have been
urging him to put a bit by for a rainy day. He obviously actually
believed he had eliminated boom and bust, despite the lessons of history.

Actually Churchill was trying to save the lives of Iraqis
when he suggested the genocidal Kurds should be treated
with tear gas, instead of bombing and machine gunning them.
"I do not understand this squeamishness about the use of gas.
We have definitely adopted the position at the Peace Conference
of arguing in favour of the retention of gas as a permanent method
of warfare. It is sheer affectation to lacerate a man with the
poisonous fragment of a bursting shell and then to boggle at
making his eyes water by means of lachrymatory gas."
"I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised
tribes. The moral effect should be so good that the loss of life
should be reduced to a minimum. It is not necessary to use the
most deadly gases: gasses can be used which would cause great
inconvenience and would spread a lively terror and yet leave no
serious permanent effects on most of those affected."

It references a copy-cat article in THE GUARDIAN by some revisionista:
'Adding bomb-racks to Vickers Vernon troop carriers, Harris more
or less invented the heavy bomber as well as night "terror" raids.

Nothing wrong with that. Alcoholic depressives are frequently very high-IQ
people whose depression is fuelled by the inability of those around them to
understand their understanding of the circumstances, and here I speak from
personal experience. As for warmongering, Churchill argued against it long
and hard until the failure of Chamberlain's initiative (which was little
more than an delaying tactic, because he though that war was inevitable and
wanted the UK to be properly defended what it happened). Churchill was put
into a position where he could have rolled over and let Hitler invade
Britain, or to resist at whatever cost. That isn't warmongering, given
Hitler's avowed intentions. That's defence, and the principal reason that
you are now still able to speak English, as opposed to German.

Something I have wondered (aimlessly) about... What would have
to change in our capitalist system to eliminate boom-bust cycles?

Sheer fantasy. Hitler never intended to invade England. He was briefly
tempted to do so after the sudden collapse of France and the associated
attrition of Britain's defences. But after a few perfunctory air raids
he sensibly decided to leave it alone and get on with his strategic plan
of eastward expansion while leaving his western wall impregnable.

For that there is no one "principal reason" but many, among which the
most significant include Pearl Harbour and Stalingrad, and their
aftermaths.

Let me see: -
Churchill - took power during a war, saved the country and got us out of the
war.
Blair - took power during peace and prosperity, got us into a war (that we
are still in), ruined the country and then jumped ship...
Still she only has eyes for Tony.
