TEIGNMOUTH residents had no idea a paedophile rapist was living in
their midst for years until he went on the run facing a 20-year jail
sentence.
John Tregalles, 61, was on trial at Bolton Crown Court for a string of
sex attacks on young boys and girls but went missing while on bail.
He was allowed to return to his home in Northumberland Place by Judge
William Morris after the trial adjourned for the weekend, but did not
return to court last week after the break.
His trial continued and he was sentenced in his absence to 20 years in
prison.
Police launched a national manhunt for Tregalles and issued his
mugshot in an appeal for public help.
Michael Fairweather of Fairweather Newsagents in Northumberland Place,
said he knew Tregalles well and thought he was a 'really nice bloke'.
He said he was shocked to find out he was a convicted paedophile.
Mr Fairweather, who knew Tregalles for five years, said: "Like most
people, you think you've got an idea of what a paedophile is like
horrible. But he wasn't ..............
