OT-How to find a missing person?
Not really missing. Someone I know is in his 70s and lost touch with
his sister many years ago. Any ideas on how to start searching for her
without hiring expensive ex plods or bribing current ones?

One good place to start would be the UK genealogy sites, they have a lot of
good links to various organisations/Govt departments that are a good place
to start... You might also see some adverts there from people who search the
births/deaths/marriages/census/phone books for a hobby, and won't cost you
too much.
I'm told the UKinfo discs are pretty good if you know her first/last
name(s), maybe you can find someone with a current copy who can do a search
for you.

The nice thing about Friends Reunited is that the users
invariably use their real names. An important factor if
you want to find a person.

www.192.com works well for slightly unusual names, but if you've got some
idea where she is, that might work.

Plus it isn't Facebook.
Therefore it actually has an interface that's useable and vaguely
intuitive - unlike the piece of shit that Facebook try to pass off as an
interface.

Always a good idea to check down the back of the sofa before you
fork out any money.

Steve Wright's Sunday Love Songs on Radio 2 does a 'lost loves' spot, which
can be used to contact relatives. I would reckon that a better bet for
finding someone in their 70s than facebook or friends reunited, although it
may take a few tries to get a mention.

A lot depends on how unusual theeir name is.
I agree that friendsreunited is a good place to start. Also try:
1) www.192.com
2) type their name into google.
3) http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ search to see if they have died.
4) http://www.findmypast.com/
5) help your friend find you: type YOUR name into google. if your
friend was looking for you would they find you? if not, set up a
webpage so they can.

Because they'll be enough money lost down there to finance the quest? :)

Salvation Army: http://www.look4them.org.uk/.
Don't forget that some people want to go missing and they are entitled
to do so.
