The danger of Defra - Telegraph
The danger of Defra
(Filed: 20/02/2006)

Only one section of the British public has any excuse, so far, to panic
about the worldwide spread of the H5N1 variety of bird flu, and that is our
nation's poultry farmers.

Where viruses are concerned, it is never safe to predict the future: Peter
Medawar, the Nobel Prize-winning immunologist, once described a virus as "a
piece of nucleic acid surrounded by bad news". The situation is changing
daily. Nevertheless, in the absence of evidence that H5NI has mutated to
spread from human to human, the worst news for Britain remains the fact that
the situation is being handled by Defra.

As we learnt last week, this hybrid of a department is more interested in
global warming than agriculture. This will not have come as a surprise to
farmers, who remember the shocking mess it made of the foot-and-mouth
epidemic in 2001, first brushing aside the problem and then, after weeks of
lethargy, in effect closing the countryside in order to organise a ruthless
holocaust.

Asked about bird flu yesterday, John Reid, the Defence Secretary, said
blithely: "I'm sure that the Government has got all the necessary measures
there." Scientists are not so sure.

The virologist Prof John Oxford reckons that, while Defra might be equipped
to cope with an outbreak, "the great gaping chasm seems to me that they're
not prepared to act to stop one coming in the first place". By which time,
of course, chicken farmers all over the land would be filing for bankruptcy.

Defra must indeed act fast: not only to prevent an epidemic, but also to ram
home the message that you cannot catch bird flu by eating poultry.

Avian flu is not a food-borne virus; the livelihood of 2,500 farmers depends
on public awareness of this fact. Perhaps the Government should adopt the
slogan of an irritating ad campaign of a few years ago: make it chicken
tonight.

============
small note - Mr Oxford seems to have been widely reported saying that
keeping birds inside will stop the virus entering the country -- how does he
work that one out? Its patently untrue.
Seems like some self-publicising going on - if he is a Prof he should know
better.

Yes, yes. Britain's children and parents have nothing to worry about.

A rather sad doomsday cult chicken breeder tells us all is well.

Over reaching yourself again, are you not?

Why don't you take official advice - get ready to get your poultry in. If
you can't so that, you have no option but to cull.

All the local lads down here, that I know, are reconciled to putting people
before profit. One told me yesterday - "one case of Bird Flu and the lot are
being culled."

Prof John Oxford is a virologist. He knows about viruses in human bodies
and how to treat them. He is not, as far as I can see, an
epidemiologist.

Unfortunately, like many experts, he can fall flat on his face when he
moves outside his specialist field. This happens with experts so
frequently that it is depressing. Their reasoning can become worse than
that of an intelligent layperson, because they seem not to THINK. They
have the necessary intellectual ability but they don't use it.

[End of rant - I feel better now!]

And I'm not sure how anyone can really know if that chicken they're
being urged to eat was ever really British.

An expert is someone who knows more and more about less and less until he
eventually knows absolutely everything about nothing at all.

I'd have thought you'd have known that!<g>

Watched an interview with one of those, broadcast on Newsnight yesterday
evening. I think it was Prof. Oxford - anyway, according to my memory of
what the guy said, housing poultry isn't rocket science, just a matter
of [I think I'm quoting this part accurately] "getting a few chickens
into huts".

I found myself wondering if Jill was watching. :-)

Did you see that video, a week or two back, about Microsoft developing a
bug-reporting system giving direct feedback from user to programmer?

I sometimes wonder what would happen if "Question Time" picked up some
elements from "The Golden Shot" and "Big Brother".

Huh! XPhome already does this. Every time I find a glitch it offers the
opportunity to send a report. What with un-notified software *upgrades*
and regular glitch reports I spend more money dialling home to Microsoft
than posting to newsgroups:-(

I was talking to a lady yesterday that got her hips done some years
ago, and found it very hard to get going again, every so often to the
hospital to see varieties of specialists. Eventually, she went to her
G.P. for some ordinary problem, he looked at her foot, said `You have
cancer in that toe', she got the toe removed and is getting to walk
again.
