Antibiotic overuse - USA
Pat's Note: A good summary of the legislative position in the USA.

Defra's bent vets are knee deep on the side of the "bad boys."

They went as far as threatening a witness to the national legislature.
Nothing like that has happened in the USA, as far as we know.

If there had been any such incident, the miscreants would have been
behind bars years ago. The USA controls their civil servants. Britain
employs and protects crooks.

Defra's vets will be called to account for their actions over the past
decade. The world will be coming to demand explanations.

Dangers of overuse in farm animals
By Stephen J. Jay

There is growing debate regarding the loss of effectiveness of
antibiotics and legislation in Congress that would address this major
public health  problem.

Two pieces of bipartisan legislation address the crisis of antibiotic
resistance. The Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act
(PAMTA) seeks to decrease drug-resistant micro-organisms by reducing
unnecessary use of antibiotics in industrial farms. This in turn would
preserve effectiveness of current and future antibiotics for treating
people or animals. The Strategies to Address Antimicrobial Resistance
Act (STARR Act) would strengthen public health infrastructure needed
for management of antibiotic-resistant diseases. Together these pieces
of legislation would create a comprehensive response to a critical
public health threat.
