Reorganisation of the State Veterinary Service - yet again
It will not have escaped anyones' notice that MAFF-Defra are
reorganising their bent vets yet again.

I imagine that we will have to face yet another misleading new name
with the same old crew lying and looting their way through England's
battered countryside.

Why we can't just sack the lot and recruit some reliable Albanians
beats me.

An "England Only" change of policy is envisaged which seems to suggest
that the fact that hitherto the real decisions have been made in
Edinburgh has finally sunk in and the political ramifications
realised.

It will take rather more than the PM holidaying in pig country and
visiting an idyllic pig farm to assuage the English and Welsh when
they find out just what has been going on for the last decade.

The government are obviously preparing themselves as best they can for
the inevitable explosion when they finally have to admit that MRSA in
Britain's hospitals is linked to pigs - and that they have done
absolutely nothing about it since receiving the Dutch warning four
years ago.

Then the links to excessive antibiotic use to try to cope with the
hitherto secret epidemic of mutated PMWS are going to revealed and the
roof will fall in. You cannot, in a democracy, allow civil servants to
interfere with witnesses in England to a select committee and then
mount a cover-up orchestrated by Scottish Government vets.

It just ain't cricket.

Major reform will be inevitable which will include the proper
regulation of veterinarians. One imagines that the RCVS will not
survive the revelations and the ultimate say so of the Privy Council
will go too.

In everything but spin the government are trailing behind events.

Ultimately, the process will probably be dictated by a hail of claims
for compensation on a scale never seen before, anywhere.

I should add

The proposed changes in the SVS have one interesting side effect.

The government are making them part of an "independent" body. That may
help the government to disassociate themselves from past and current
criminal activity by state vets, but unless special arrangements are
made, it will remove Crown Immunity" in respect of any future
offences.

So, you can expect ex-government vets to "come clean" once the new
body takes control. That means the government has to try to continue
to refuse to release the results of MRSA testing in pigs until the end
of the year and to try to create the new body very quickly indeed.

I can't see them getting away with that.

It will employ battalions of young lawyers from now until a lavish
retirement each equipped with a cringing former vet sweating in the
corner of their office.

Mind you, if I was faced with a problem on this scale, I would have
come out with my hands up by now.

But, I'm neither a sleazy politician or a bent government vet.
