Webmail logon: specifying the mailbox name
I have finally got around to experimenting (with some sub-domains) with the
C mail servers, and hence the various webmail interfaces.

Suppose I go to the insecure logon page:

  http://blue.wingsandbeaks.org.uk.mail.aaisp.net.uk/

There I'm asked for the email address and password. So, it appears I have
to type something like:

  mailboxname@blue.wingsandbeaks.org.uk

into the address field. Since I'm on a webpage whose URL is specific to me,
it seems to me that it would be sensible only to have to type:

  mailboxname

in that field. But this doesn't seem to work.

Having said that, I really don't want to have to type anything into the
email address field. What would be a lot more useful would be being able to
store a set of mailbox-specific URLs in my bookmarks, eg like:

http://blue.wingsandbeaks.org.uk.mail.aaisp.net.uk/fast.cgi?bx=mailboxname

Does something like this already exist?

(I know I could look at the source of the login page and try to work out
what the 'action' taken by the form is for either SquirrelMail or RoundCube
login, but I'm a long way from being an expert at what all that means, and
in any case I'd like a /supported/ method of doing this rather than one I
work out for myself, in case you change the internal workings.

N, it needs to be the email address.

No, but I could look in to it...

I'd be very grateful...

Something line this?

 http://g.hopeless.aaisp.net.uk/front.php?email=you@domain

(It's only for testing at the moment, and only on the G server)

Something like that indeed.

I know about the A, B and C servers, but what's G? If this makes it into
real use, would we need to know which server we were on to use it?

Works for me :-)

How about allowing the inclusion of the password in the link as an
option? This would save having to use an unknown keyboard (with
possible keylogger present?) when using a USB stick on a public machine.
The link can be hidden, using %nn, etc. as with the account page.

Might be an idea to allow preselection of the Webmail program and
optional use of the secure link?

I've added password to this, the front.php file is now gone, as it's
incorporated in to the front page of webmail (see the notes at the bottom)

eg:
http://blue.wingsandbeaks.org.uk.mail.aaisp.net.uk/?email=you@whatever.com&password=xxx

The 'C' email service is infact multiple machines, D, E, F, G,
H.hopeless as well as a bunch of spam checking servers - you don't
really need to know about the servers, as DNS directs you to the one to
use.

Hope this helps.

Andrew.

Works fine for me, thanks. Now I'm waiting to try it from a foreign
connection :-)

Sometimes, when working directly, I've found leaving the translation of
mail.mydomain by AAISP results in a route that fails to go through to
the C email service (.19) resulting in a timeout (this also confirmed by
tracert). Locally translating it to the address of one of the other
members of the C cluster (.14 to .18) works fine. Maybe this is fixed
now but it's nice to have the option...
