Sky+ HD Stuck on standby
I've done the reset thing at the mains, waited the 2.5 minutes,
removed the card, reset, reset, placed card back in reset.
I've held the forward and back buttons down after a reset, waited 30
seconds then pressed select twice and watched the whirly lights waddle
around with the recording light on.
I've reset. I've tried this again.
Sky are coming out on Sat June 6 to fix/replace (to be fair they did
offer tomorrow - but I can't do that).
Any other suggestions that wont invalidate the guarantee?
Thanks

Your problem might be a failed PSU, or a defective Hard Disk
Drive, or the consequences of an interrupted or corrupted
firmware upgrade.
When he arrives, the man from Sky will spend a few minutes,
trying to reactivate the box. If he can't, he won't even attempt
a repair. He will put it in his van and install a replacement.
If that happens, you should insist upon a brand new receiver -
not reconditioned equipment.
Removal of the casing would invalidate the warranty - although in
practice, I doubt whether a Sky installer would even notice. But
realistically, is there any point?
You don't know why the box has failed. So unless you are an
electronics engineer, I doubt whether there is anything you, as
consumer, could do. OK - you could remove the casing and look
inside. But what would you do, if you can see bulging capacitors
or other defective components?
If the Sky installer replaces your receiver, you will lose all
recorded programmes that are on your old hard drive. Provided
your HDD hasn't failed, you could use software from
www.skycopyplus.co.uk, to transfer some (or all) of your
recordings to another HDD. To do so, you would need to remove
the HDD from your receiver. The HDD housing screws are covered
by warranty seals, so that would definitely invalidate the
manufacturer's warranty.

Thanks for the advice Bob. I'll leave it as it is then.
I didn't ahve that much on the hard disk - I've been burning stuff to
a dvd recorder that I want to keep - all apart from "Extreme Trains",
but that'll come around again, so not that bothered.
A week without live TV. Thank goodness for torrents.

On my Thomson it is *NOT* necessary to remove the HDD to connect it to a PC!
It is necessary to open the STB when the SATA cable to the HDD could be
removed and replaced by one to the PC with no further dismantling.
Of course *NO* Sky installer has ever been known to do more than a box-swap
or to ever check warranty seals!
