Weekend English Premier League
Villa v Wigan
-------------
Villa have reached the point where O'Neill has run out of steam and are
likely to fall back this year. Wigan have a bright young boss but keep
selling their best players. 2-0 to Villa.
Blackburn v Man City
--------------------
Blackburn have bought cheaply and another season of struggle looms. Man
City have bought mainly expensive showboaters who will go missing away
from home and during the cold depths of winter. 0-0.
Bolton v Sunderland
-------------------
Bolton have bought economically and well and should have enough to stay
in this division. Sunderland have a decent new manager and have made
some decent signings but still have a nucleus of second-raters. 1-1.
Chelsea v Hull
--------------
Chelsea have marked time this summer and their aging stars are not
likely to be better than last season. Hull fell off a cliff last season
and have shown no signs of improvement since. 3-0 to Chelsea.
Everton v Arsenal
-----------------
Everton didn't have the money to strengthen their team. Arsenal had a
good pre-season but look like a team of lightweights. 1-1.
Portsmouth v Fulham
-------------------
Portsmouth had the heart ripped out of their team and are likely to lose
even more players before the window closes. Fulham punched above their
weight last season but are likely to be safe again. 0-0.
Stoke v Burnley
---------------
All talk but little spend for Stoke, however they've still got the
nucleus of the team which surprised everyone last season. Burnley have a
bright young manager but bought second-raters. 2-1 to Stoke.
Wolves v West Ham
-----------------
As usual McCarthy has bought good young players from outside the prem
and as usual the result is likely to be relegation. West Ham have a
decent squad of players and a bright young manager. 1-1.
Man Utd v Birmingham
--------------------
Man Utd are weaker than last season and retaining their title can't be
taken for granted. Birmingham recruited no-hopers. 5-0 to Man Utd.
Tottenham v Liverpool
---------------------
Redknapp was his usual, busy self, recruiting more players than you can
shake a stick at (apart from fit defenders), and some of them will
surely do okay. Liverpool had a disastrous summer transfer season and
are most likely to lose their top four position. 2-0 to Tottenham.
