He is an honest and diligent scientist standing up for the truth in
the face of ignorance and stupidity.

Unfortunatly ignorance and stupidity have never been in short supply
in the sort of authoritarian societies you are fascinated by. 

The bigoted Jesus worshippers of the Inquisition had the same respect
for truth and honesty as you and the government you sympathise with
have when they forced another man of science to "abjure, curse, and
detest" the truth. 

You have much in common with those ignorant, superstitious bigots.
