Europhobes! Still confident about going it alone?
The pound dropped to $1.69 earlier today. Still confident in the
engine of the British economy, the City, being able to feed us?

The City has never fed us, so I've no idea what your question means.

Food producers do make food which we then buy, however, and eat. I'm pretty
confident they're still doing that at the moment.

I've also noticed two things: Average food prices are probably falling. And
exporters are likely to get a boost as the pound weakens.

So you reckon Britain will come out of all this with its financial
"reputation" intact?

I think a LOT of folks are going to be having a much closer look at
Britain and the US over the next few years and the way we allowed
greedy fools to take control of the asylums.

Unlike all those other European countries whose banks went tits-up?
And those in the Far East?

I still don't really understand what you're asking.

If you mean will people still trade with British banks and companies, then
yes certainly.

I expect Britain to keep its sovereign AAA rating.

I expect that some banks may be downgraded for a year or more, while others
will stay the same.

But what does it mean in real terms to lose reputation? With who, anyway -
foreign press? Foreign regulators? A café owner in Alexandria?

I dunno. As usual, you're not really saying anything meaningful, so I can't
disagree or agree with you. What does it mean to "have a much closer look"?
And what if these folks do look closely - are they in a position to do
anything substantive?

It would be helpful if you talked in more concrete terms. Then I'd willingly
take a position!

Germany and France did not and do not have a mortage/sub prime
problem. In France you cannot get a mortgage bigger than 70%, as the
guy on Question Time said last night. In Germany, too, you always had
to save up a pretty sizable deposit before any lender would even let
you through their doors. They would scratch their heads in horror at
our stupidity for our 125% mortgages. And Britons owe a massive £1.4
trillion. Our UK economy is decidely more unhealthy than many on the
Continent. More greedy, more unhealthy, longer and deeper long-term
side effects. Moreover, our piddling little brick and daub rabbit
hutches are not much of an asset compared to the much more solidly
built properties on the Continent, and their plot sizes are usually
much larger, too.

Which ones would they be then? So far only one bank had gone "tits up"
i, the EU, Fortis, excluding the UK of course and Iceland which is part
of Europe but is not a member of the EU

Nothing to do with the EU. They don't have the same obsession with
property ownership for profit.

The UK, or the City of London at least, is one of the most important
financial centres in the world. Or was at least. It is responsible for a
large part of the Unions trade, so called 'invisibles'. The current
situation will do it no good whatsoever.

What, no answer? There's a thing.

Many people have died for a cause they believe in over the centuries,
however uncertain they might be that a successful outcome would be
better.

Now I'm not saying I'd go that far, but if there *was* a fight, I know
which side I'd be on!

Indeed. And statistics show that over the last 200 years, 100% of dictators
attempting to take over Europe have been defeated. So best be on the winning
side...
