Unarmed Coffee Shop Waitress Nabs Fleeing Bank Robbery Suspect
Saturday , October 04, 2008
ADVERTISEMENTAn unarmed coffee shop waitress in Hillborough County, Fla.,
tackled and subdued an armed robber after he hit the Valrico State Bank on
Friday, Bay News 9 reported.
The Da Silva's Coffee Shop employee had been trained in Germany as a police
officer, but she was only half the size of the suspect she took down.
Local police said suspect Jeffrey Merritt, 44, ran past Da Silva's on the
way to his getaway car after robbing the bank.
The waitress - the Tampa Tribune reports she wished to remain unidentified -
reportedly saw Merritt running with something and looking behind him. She
chased him down, yelling, "Freeze or I'm going to shoot" and then tackled
him.
She did not have a gun, but the bluff worked, and the suspect surrendered.
"I knew she was a trained officer, but I didn't know what that really
meant," Karen Raga, a co-worker, told The Tampa Tribune.
Bystanders then helped the waitress sit on Merritt until police arrived.

See how well Conceal carry laws work, the criminals never know who is
armed, and even a bluff worked, but a person is a fool to bluff without
a firearm, The "stop or I will shoot" """BLUFF""" does not work often,
unless they can see your firearm in your hand ready to fire. If this had
been a career criminal, or gang member, they would have killed her
before she could draw that gun they thought she had
Without the Fl. C.C. law, this would not have worked, yelling that in
D.C. would have been a waste of time. They know no one but criminals
have guns and if another criminal was trying to rip him off, they would
just shoot him in the back, so would any cop, seeing a fleeing "armed"
bank robber
That for showing us how C.C. laws help protect even the unarmed

Very good post. I live in Florida and carry all the time. This proves that
carry laws are more successful than not allowing anyone to carry at all
except cops.

She could just as easily wind up in jail herself if some gung ho
prosecutor wanted to be a badass.
Unless I had seen an actual officer chasing the guy, then yeah, I'd
assist if I could. But not simply because some guy was running by me
and looking back. If there was a gun visible, I'd just wait for the
cops and keep an eye on the guy.
What if she had tackled an undercover cop who was chasing the real bad
guy? Maybe he was looking back to see if another officer was around.

They also make the job of enforcement tougher because the cops never
know if a person is packin or not. Did you not read where it said the
lady was "NOT" armed?
Being from Germany, I don't believe you can get a CC permit while on a
visa.
What if the guy decided to stop and shoot her dead instead?
Having been trained in firearms, I sure as hell don't go around
shouting, "Stop or I'll shoot".
I'd fire a round in the air then shout at the guy. That way he knows
it ain't no bluff.

Really? Criminals obey the law now?
Free hint, the police will NEVER know if a suspect is packing or not.

Depending on the jurisdiction you can.

Then she would have been dead.
Like I said a gutsy lady.

Good for you, but I can tell you there are times I would do so.
> I'd fire a round in the air then shout at the guy.
Right, and you have now wasted a round, illegally discharged a firearm in
city limits, brandishing, the illegal threat of deadly force and if that
round hits anything on the way down your ass is grass.
> That way he knows
> it ain't no bluff.
Who cares if he knows? You warned him, more than you are legally required to
do. If he doesn't believe then he pays the price.

Cops here in UK would not like it. They need to know when they gun
down inocent people that there is no chance of retaliation.

I have several cops and a Marine MP in my family. They all prefer citizens
carry. The job is no harder for law enforcement since the cops don't know if
a person is "packing" or not anyhow. I lived in Newark, NJ for awhile. Cops
always assumed people were packing until they frisked them. Don't you watch
COPS?? Are you so blind you think that just because NJ doesn't issue hardly
any permits that cops would walk up to a car at night and leave their gun in
the car or not have their hand on it getting ready in case the driver had a
gun?? You know nothing of police work if you think that. Or do you know cops
who say, "Oh, Charlie, we can walk up to this van with no plates at night
time and not be on alert. Guns aren't allowed here. These 4 nice gang
members are just riding around looking for a church to join."

That is a moot point as the cops never, never know at first if someone is
armed or not. That was one of the dumbest statements ever from the LEO in DC
"We wont know if someone is armed or not now." Well, No Shit! You never did
before!

I dont know where you trained, but here you never ever fire a warning shot.
Deadly force is used or not used, period. Warning shots will get you in more
trouble than just stopping the threat in Texas, anyway.

That is true whether or not the state has concealed carry. Do you think
that gangbangers in LA aren't packing?

She took a chance. If I remember correctly she was ex law enforcement
herself.

You fire a round into the air in some states and you go to jail. That
round has to come down somewhere and in some states it is an illegal act.

Which may or may not stop him from pulling a gun and trying to place a

It certainly would be here in Nashville. BTW, security is
tighter than a drum around Belmont University's Curb Center.
And that's just for the 3,000 media types covering the 2nd
Presidential Debate.

Judging from his posts, that's a really BIG target.
Any thing from Ruger on the fix yet?
The old man may be gone, but the company apparently still
adheres to his standards of quality and service.

On the SR9? Yep, they emailed me about a month ago, sent me a ship box
via overnite FedEx, picked it up the next day and returned it with a new
spare mag and completely new trigger assembly one week later. That also
arrived via overnite FedEx.
The grittiness of the trigger is completely gone. It is now very
smooth....particularly for a Ruger.
> The old man may be gone, but the company apparently still

You betcha....
I also picked up an SP-101 in .327 Federal. 3" bbl. Haven't shot it yet
but am looking forward to it. One more round with about 80% of the
muzzle energy of a .357 Mag. It also shoots .32H&R and .32 Magnum. Less
power there but either one makes a plinking cartridge.
Just too damn many guns to single out just one for shooting on a
particular day. Helluva problem to have, eh? ;)

Guns should never be fired in the air. The bullet comes down fast and many

You need retraining.
Firing a shot into the air is not a responsible action.

Some of those "civilians" help kill US soldiers. And even if they're
innocent, would you prefer Saddam back? How many civilians did he kill? If
he got the atomic bomb and aimed it at Israel from Baghdad and we nuked the
launching site, how many civilians would die?
I don't know your nationality nor do I care. But I know wherever you live,
your country killed civilians at one time or another. Stop the
self-righteous crap and find a job. How some 12 year old punk (that's the
level of your IQ) has this much time to post all the shit you do is a
terrible waste of time. Go take music lessons or better yet, ask Mommy for
new crayons and draw pictures of the psychiatrists that you visit.
And if you're "prof. jonez", you really are a lunatic. Your entire insult
vocabulary is "asswipe" and "eh?" If you'd sell your computer since you
obviously aren't learning much by using it, you could bail your Mother out
of jail on that prostitution charge. Then pay for her treatment in a drug
rehab center. After that, if there is money left over, go pay for your meds
and this time, TAKE them.
Oh, I have a message for you. The proctologist called. They found your head.
