"Global Warming: Who's to blame?" (London, 23 May 2007)
The Central London branch of the Socialist Party will be hosting a public
discussion on the topic of global warming on Wednesday, 23 May 2007. A
poster/leaflet is available at
<http://www.worldsocialism.org/images/posters/20070523-globalwarming.pdf>.

Date : Wednesday, 23 May 2007 at 19:30
Topic : GLOBAL WARMING: WHO'S TO BLAME?
Speaker : Adam Buick
Location: The Plough, 27 Museum Street, Bloomsbury, WC1A
(Just south of the British Museum)
Nearest tubes: Tottenham Court Road, Holborn
Abstract:

Is it our fault as individuals for consuming too much of the wrong things?
Or of the system of competition for markets and profits where businesses
employ polluting methods of production because they are cheaper?

Learn and discuss why changing our lifestyle is no solution unless we first
make the Earth’s resources the common heritage of all mankind and end
production for profit.

End production for profit, and get on the dole.

Who's to blame, it has already been said it is the termites and the
cows.

I think socialism is part of the problem, not part of the solution. As
an example, if you rank countries by their ratio of GDP to CO2
emissions then the bottom of the list is dominated by China, ex-soviet
countries, and other assorted marxists (or former marxists who haven't
recovered yet). The top of the list is dominated by "capitalist"
countries.

You could perhaps make a virtue of this by saying that the countries
on the bottom of the list have lower emissions *per capita* thanks to
their poverty & underdevelopment.
