      216/06 Planning Policies for Sustainable Building report

      LGA have circulated a new report containing suggestions and guidance
to help all local authorities to adopt planning policies that promote
sustainable design and construction.

      The report and guidance is the outcome of a joint project between the
LGA, Planning Officers Society (POS), Waste and Resources Action Programme
(WRAP), Planning Advisory Service (PAS), Sustainability Forum and the London
Borough of Enfield.

      The partners worked with consultants to research current advice,
identify excellent standards, review good practice and understand the
drivers and barriers to implementing ambitious planning policy.

      The report recommends setting higher standards on a range of issues,
including carbon, water, materials, recycling, and biodiversity. This will
help to ensure that the impact of new buildings on the environment, both
during construction and over their whole life cycle is minimised.

      Supporting documents include the results of a survey of Heads of
Planning on current practice, a Literature review of all current advice and
guidance on sustainable design and construction and a Skills Matrix for the
