Notes:-
2008: Davis sought re-election in order to obtain a vote of
confidence from his constituents as an opponent of proposals
to allow police to detain those suspected of terrorist offences
for up to 42 days, and as part of a more general campaign to
oppose restrictions on civil liberties. The Liberal Democrats,
UK Independence Party and British National Party agreed with
his stance and endorsed him.
Garrett was the candidate of the 'Miss Great Britain Party', a
title she held at the time of the election. She was sponsored
by the promoters of the Miss Great Britain contest.
Saward had been the victim of a rape and sought election in
support of the use of Closed Circuit Television and a database
of DNA samples, both of which Davis had criticized.
Nicholson advocated reform of methods for learning mathematics.
Craig, the author of a book critical of excessive government
spending, sought election as a candidate committed to economy
in the public sector.
Pinder was the candidate of the 'New Party', which he had formed.
Howitt sought election as a 'Freedom 4 Choice' candidate. He
was a public house landlord who had been prosecuted for
allowing tobacco smoking in his premises, and was opposed to
the prohibition on smoking in public places.
Astley was opposed to the extension of testing in schools.
Bishop was the candidate of the 'Church of the Militant Elvis'
Party which he had formed.
Wood sought election in order to campaign for better care for
injured service personnel.
Darwood was inspired to contest the election by his religious
views.
Farnon sought election in order to promote his method of helping
people to stop smoking tobacco.

David Bishop, sometimes known as 'Lord Biro', poet. Born 1946. Has worked
as a painter and decorator. Art exhibitor. Contested Tatton in the 1997
general election, Brentwood and Ongar in the 2001 general election, and
Erewash in the 2005 general election. Contested Wollaton West ward,
Nottingham City Council in 2007.
Ronnie Carroll, musician. Born (as Ronald Cleghorn) 18th August 1934,
Belfast. UK entrant to the Eurovision Song Contest, 1962 and 1963.
Contested Hampstead and Highgate in the 1997 General election, the
Uxbridge byelection of July 1997, and the Hartlepool byelection of
September 2004. Divorced.

consultant. Author of 'Pro-active management' (1991) and 'Management
Masterclass' (1996) as Neil Glass. Founder of The Original Book Company,
2005. Author of 'Rip-Off!' (2005), 'Plundering the Public Sector' (2006)
and 'Squandered' (2008) as David Craig.
Herbie Crossman, politician. Born 1948. Elected as Liberal Democrat
councillor for Ridgeway ward, Harrow Borough Council, 1994. Left the
Liberal Democrats in 1996 and joined the Referendum Party, 1997.
Contested Harrow West in the 1997 election as the Referendum Party

Gemma Garrrett, glamour model. Born 1981 in Dundonald, County Antrim.

Rev. George Hargreaves, Pastor of the Hephzibah Christian Centre,

1997. A member of the Christian People's Alliance. Founder of
Operation Christian Vote in 2004. Top of the Operation Christian Vote

Jill Saward, self-employed journalist and campaigner. Born 1965 in
Liverpool. Victim of the Ealing Vicarage Rape in 1986; waived her
anonymity in 1990. Worked as children's shoe fitter, head housekeeper,
teacher, cash office clerk, secretary/receptionist and classroom
assistant. Currently self-employed as a sexual violence caseworker and
advocate.
Norman Scarth, retired. Born January 1925. Served in the Royal Navy
during World War II, surviving the sinking of a Murmansk convoy.
Subsequently a farmer and horse breeder. Formerly Hon. Secretary of
the Litigants in Person Society. Contested Chesterfield in the 1997
general election, and Sedgefield in the 2007 byelection.
Walter Sweeney, solicitor. Born 23rd April 1949. Educated at Lawrence
Sheriff School, Rugby School, Darwin College, Cambridge University,
and the University of Hull. Joined the Conservative Party in 1963.
Admitted to the roll of solicitors 1976. Rugby Borough Councillor from
1976 to 1979. Bedfordshire County Councillor from 1981 to 1993.
Contested Stretford at the 1983 general election. MP for Vale of
Glamorgan from 1992 to 1997. Established Walter Sweeney & Co Solicitors
in 1997. Joined Yorkshire Law 2003. North Cave Parish Councillor from
2003. Left the Conservative Party and joined the UK Independence Party
