Edward Timpson
Edward Timpson will no doubt take his seat as the victor in the Crewe and
Nantwich bye-election to cries from the Governmant benches of 'Cobblers!'

Hmmm...
I tend to use Timpson's only as a purveyor of engraved winners' trophies.
Perhaps he could be magnanimous and present a particularly handsome
loser's trophy to...?

I think they might be a bit quieter on that occasion. I note that the
PM and most of the Cabinet have gone into hiding since the result,
leaving the likes of Tony Wright and Chris Bryant to take the media
flak, along with (as always, it seems) Harriden Harm-many.

Tony Who?
Chris Who?
I saw the Chris character on the BBC TV coverage last night - not having
seen the start of it (and having missed the introduction), I at first
thought he was some LibDem activist - or a Daily Mirror reporter.

I noticed he made an un-guarded comment about "having two years". At the
general election the constituency will return to Labour and Mr Timpson
can get back to his real trade.

Ordinarily that might have been expected; but unless Labour do something
drastic -- and have a chunk of very good luck with regard to the
economy, the seat is unlikely to revert two years hence. It now seems
likely that the only way Timpson can avoid re-election is by not
standing next time.

Ah you missed a classic. He got asked why Labour had put him up, a mere PPS
to Harriet Harman, rather than a Cabinet minister or junior minister or even
a Parliamentary Under-Secretary! Can we hear the bottom of the barrell being
scraped?

Wasn't it Gwyneth Dunwoody who said that really, she represented a Tory
consituency? A little hard work and maybe Edwatd Timpson will have landed
himself a safe seat ...

Well, even though Crewe is indisputably a working-class, industrial,
town (major employers are a railway engineering works and the
Rolls-Royce car factory), there is still a sizeable Conservative vote in
such places, and the matter is balanced even more by the inclusion of
Nantwich.
Clearly GD had a significant personal vote (and perhaps didn't retire to
enjoy her last few years in peace, for fear of what might happen at the
next GE). But there is no reason why that effect should return for
Labour unless they can whip a popular local candidate out of a rabbit's
hat. And they'd have done that this time if they'd had one available.

Wright. I've watched him in Select Committees and in the Commons, and
he seems to be one of the better Labour lot.

Bryant. A bit of a non-entity on the whole, it appears. He certainly
hasn't impressed me in any way.

Grauniad surely, if a LibDem type. The Mirror has always been for
Labour only and attracts matching reporters, whereas the Grauniad is at
least a little broader, though still left-leaning (though I see signs
that suggest it /might/ be changing).

Hey! Less of the, err, um, 'dog'...

I shall have to look this up somewhere.
