London's contribution to UK GDP

London is streets ahead of other regions in contributing to UK GDP
according to new figures on our regional economic divide.
The extent of the UK regional divide in terms of national output and
incomes per head of the population is highlighted by new data published
by the Office for National Statistics. In 2004 the London economy
generated a gross value added nearly one third higher than the UK
average whilst Wales produced a GVA figure over twenty per cent less
than the UK mean. London's importance to the economy is shown by the
fact that it contributed 16.4% of total gross value added in 2004, a
3.5% increase on the previous year. Actually this was the slowest rate
of expansion of any of the standard regions of the UK!
