Giant cannabis plant found in Battle
Published Date: 23 October 2008
By Laura Button
THIS monster cannabis plant was discovered growing in the garden of a
house in Battle High Street. Four plants were discovered in the garden
last month after a Police Community Support Officer smelt the drug in the
town centre.
Sergeant Dan Russell, of Battle police, said: "Whilst on foot patrol in
Battle, PCSO Sam Kemp suddenly smelt the strong aroma of what she believed
was cannabis.
"She followed her nose which took her to the rear garden of a nearby
house.
"With the help of Traffic Warden Wright, she managed to look over the
garden wall and saw four large cannabis plants growing amongst other
plants and vegetables.
"As a result of inquiries made at the house, two males were arrested on
suspicion of cultivating cannabis.
"Due to the size of the plants and their roots, it took an hour and a
great deal of digging to remove the plants.
"The two males, one in his 40s and the other in his 60s, admitted the
offence, stating it was for their own personal use.
"They were given police bail and subsequently received adult cautions.
"A good piece of team work."

Well at least I now know what a cannabis plant looks like!
I wonder how the PCSO new what they smelt like?
Or have I led a very sheltered life?

You're retired and you don't know what a cannabis plant looks like?
That is truly amazing.
You must have been living in a hole in the ground.
I retire in a couple of years with well over 40 years of happy
association with cannabis behind me and hopefully many more years
ahead.
I'm very glad I discovered pot in my late teens. A most enjoyable
extra dimension to life.
Enriching, but I suppose you don't miss what you never had.

Everyone to their own taste.
Personally I prefer a tot (or three) of a good single malt.

I'm partial to a drop or two of Glenfiddich myself, but less so in
later years. I still like it, but the after effects have started to
bite like they never used to. If I drink a few glasses in the evening,
not a great lot, but enough to feel warm, happy and at peace with the
world, I feel really rough the next day, a bit of a headache, tired,
really out of it. I just don't think it's worth it any more, so I
don't often bother. One of the penalties of growing older I suppose.
Lucky for me I can enjoy a pipeful of good pot now and again. I like
the effects better than whisky, too, mellower and less debilitating,
with the added bonus of waking up bright, fresh and rested the next
morning.
Cheers!

In that case, the variety you were growing years ago must have been

Did the part where it said growing in the GARDEN go over your head? I used
to grow cannabis many years ago in my greenhouse and I can assure you there
was never any overpowering smell.

A monster? Pisspot you mean. I've seen plants two metres tall that
needed sawing down.

local police station.
When you get twenty or more cannabis plants in an unventilated room, the
smell is often overpowering.

I've never heard of complete cannabis plants being smuggled through customs
before.
I'm sure it would be very difficult, depending upon the size of the plant.

I used to know a grower about 10 years ago, good stuff too! He grew it in
a small secret room in his bungalow. When it was flowering it stunk the
whole place out (which is why he got busted several times).

Maybe it was Jacqui Smith weed, the stuff that was 10,000 times less
potent (and dangerous) than today.

They probably did; they will have entered the information on a
malfunctioning data base which they cannot operate and in a few years
they will have become enemies of the State. The story is nothing more
than PR excercise to counter the growing believe that Community Police
are nothing more than a waste of public money.

Ah.. so all those sniffer dogs at airports and harbours are waiting
for the smuggler to give himself away by inadvertantly lighting up a
big spliff before trying to get through customs?
Still - well done to the police in question. I wonder how long the
paperwork to book these two, clearly dangerous and ruthless,
characters took, in addition to the couple of hours spent ripping out
plants? Not shy of four or five hours, I'd guess. Still, at least
while those police were off the street and people were being muggled,
burgled and bum-raped as a result, they could recover from their
injuries and trauma safe in the knowledge that one 60 year old would
never be allowed to grow a plant in his own back garden for his own
personal use.

Actually, *some* cannabis produces quite a pungent aroma when growing,
so that part of the story is credible. What is *in*credible is that
there was a bobby on the beat in the first place.

Violent crime much higher than previously thought, decent citizens
afraid to go about their business because yobs rule the streets, fall
victim to crime and you can't get a copper because there aren't enough
to go round.
And what does the government do?
It increases the penalty for possessing dried leaves and diverts more
hard pressed police resources to the Botany Squad.
Oh yes, and invests millions in helicopters and high tech electronic
toys so that the Botany Squad Airborne Division can examine peoples
roofs for heat leakage.
The taxpayer must be rolling in cash.
Still, it does have entertainment value, might as well light up a
spliff and have a good laugh about it.

Ah.. but how often do we read of the young hoodie miscreant being HIGH
ON A JOINT OF POWERFUL SKUNK CANNIBIS
(afterdrinkingthreelitersofpisscheapindustrialsupermarketcider) before
commiting some act of violence or stupidity.

Of course they are - after all, they had plenty to spare when the MD's
of the nation's banks went cap-in-hand to avoid losing the second
Ferrari and the yacht in Bimini.

The alternative is going mad with frustration and cooking up
conspiracy theories that perhaps recreational alkaloids are illegal
becuase certain people with the power to keep them illegal do very
well from the illegality of them, on both ends of teh deal.
I would NEVER condone drug use though - at least not on a semi-
permanent medium like usenet. You never know when the thought police
might make condoning retroactively illegal...

Not only do drugs fund terrorism, but this week we learned that terrorists
hide their communications in child pornography. That can only mean that
drugs fund child porn as well.
I expect they'll be along shortly to blame the recession on weed.

>Well at least I now know what a cannabis plant looks like!
About 10 years ago my parents had one growing next to their drive
gatepost that was not far off that size. It was there for a couple of
years in full view of anyone walking or driving by before they pulled
it up and put on the compost heap. A month or so later a picture of
seized cannabis plants was in the local paper - then the penny dropped
as to what this mystery plant actually was.

They don't tend to get smuggled through as whole plants..
