Daily Mail: Taliban "turning dried cannabis leaves into heroin"
Yes, you read it right.

Afghanistan desert

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 1:48 PM on 12th June 2008

RAF Harrier jump jets have blown up the world's biggest drug haul in
Afghanistan by dropping three 1,000lb bombs on a 237-ton stash of
cannabis.

The haul - worth £225million and weighing more than 30 double-decker
buses - was unearthed by the Special Boat Service and local commandos.

The drugs were first stuffed into grain sacks and buried in six trenches
covering an area the size of two football pitches.

Harriers then flew over the site near Kandahar and dropped their deadly
payload.

Officials believe the area - near to the Taliban stronghold of Quetta in
Pakistan - was turning dried cannabis leaves into heroin.

After the attack from Kandahar airfield, troops set fire to the remains
with petrol.

Five tons of opium, worth £2million, was also found and destroyed.

Three people were arrested.

The previous record haul was 80 tons of cocaine in Columbia in 1998.

Afghanistan's deputy Interior Minister, Lieutenant General Abdul Hadi
Khalid, said yesterday: 'This is a new world record in the global war on
drugs.'

A full demonstration of the prohibitionists' depth of ignorance.

Dried cannabis leaves cannot be transmuted into heroin.

Dried cannabis leaves are nearly worthless except to the ignorant
who might as well buy paper.

Opium can be refined to heroin.

Coca leaves are refined to cocaine because the drug laws keep
us from importing the leaves.

Cocao beans are processed into chocolate which is evidence
of the value of processed foods. NOT!! but it comes close.

Would the heroin be 349 times stronger than the heroin of the 1960's?

Anyone know the synthesis route and yields? ISTM they'd be better off
growing opium and converting that to heroin.

What can the dried pages of the Daily Mail be turned into?

If they had that sort of chemical ability, they should be turning lead
into gold, or at least water into oil.

Presumably this was happening next door to the factory in which the
Taliban were turning scrap metal into gold in order to buy nuclear
weapons to bomb us with.

George Bush will probably be using that as an excuse to nuke them any
day now. It's about as credible as any of his other excuses for
attacking countries.

I do not think my comment will show up either:

'Turning dried cannabis leaves into heroin ? Wow, those pesky taliban !
I heard they also are capable of turning sand in to diamonds to fund
their activities.

Typical mail, some one fed you a story based on a pile of rubbish and
you reported it !'

Pre moderated = newspaper speak meaning if it does not conform it will
not be allowed.

I would not try to use this paper for wiping ones bottom as one would be
wiping on more crap than one hoped to wipe off

Tally ho, am off to turn chipboard back in to trees in a bid to save the
world.........

Yes, my response was very uncomplimentary towards the IRL trolls that
write that nonsense. I hope we make someone cry, they really do deserve it.

Maybe a newspaper should do an article, front page for sensationalism of
course, about how stupid this article is. Shaming the Maily Dail into a
flame war in which they will ultimately lose because they do not have
the intelligence to realise that cannabis does not equal heroin (this is
STILL making me chuckle).

But alas, that's just me wishful thinking. I'm sure Big Brother will be
on the front page for whatever reason. Maybe someone said a rude word!

Nor has mine. Mind you, I simply informed them how funny I thought it was
and that I've alerted Ben Goldacre about it.

Try this: post 2 comments to a story under different names. Make one a
shoot all druggies/single mums/asylum seekers and the other a
legalise/increased payments/let them stay and see which gets published.

I've done it.

My comment:

"Officials believe the area - near to the Taliban stronghold of Quetta in Pakistan - was turning dried cannabis leaves into heroin."

If this is the case I think the government should launch an immediate
investigation into this new and highly dangerous process. Most of the
UK's heroin is imported from Afghanistan so we can keep the levels down
by being tough on drug traffikers but with the prevelance of cannabis
factories in this country and now this new way of making heroin, our
streets will soon be flooded with home grown heroin. Not only that but
with it being hydroponically grown it will be skunk heroin similar to
the skunk cannabis which is causing a schizophrenia epidemic amongst our
children.

Not sure if I've got the hysteria level quite right to get it published.

Not bad. It would be more convincing all in capitals, with more
grammatical errors and misspellings. It just reads too intelligent for a
genuine Dourly Moral reader :-).

Instead of bombing the clever people who were making heroin from
canabis *leaves*, why not offer them a job making oil from tabloid
newspapers?

Oil from sewage, landfills and politicians would also be useful.
