I am, accidentally, white.  I was, however, born in Harlem, 
N.Y., almost 70 years ago.  My fellow schoolmates, at home party 
mates, street corner hangin' 'round mates. date mates, and just 
plain mates were black, brown, yellow, and white (Greek, Irish, 
Puerto Rican, Southern Slave descendants, Formosa asylum 
seekers, Jews, and whatnots) - and if we'd had a few reds I 
don't believe any would have noticed.  One of the advantages of 
youth is ethnic-blindness.  Sadly my folks (mother) feared 
racial confrontation and I was subjected to "white flight."  For 
some years afterward I missed my friends but eventually I became 
part of the white ghetto and my new personal interests left me 
there in oblivion.

During my white ghetto years I've had several occasions to 
acquaint and gratifyingly befriend non-whites (I hate that term 
in the same way I hate the term "atheist,"  it begins by stating

acquaint and gratifyingly befriend non-whites (I hate that term 
in the same way I hate the term "atheist,"  it begins by stating 
that there is something wrong with other than being white or 
being theist).  None of my adult encounters with other races 
(citizens of Earth) has been any different than those within my 
ghetto.  We share the same family problems, our cars need the 
same service, our taxes are too high, we disagree with certain 
government actions and agree with others, our religions are 
important or anathema.  We simply do not share a history of 
bigotry and that is an inescapable point of discussion and hoped 
for understanding.

I don't want to belabor the point that many whom I know have 
served in the military and/or obtained doctoral degrees in 
physical and/or mental health, or just become stock brokers, 
realtors, office workers, or laborers.  I'm simply a better 
person for all the other people that I know.

I am, accidentally, white.  I was, however, born in Harlem, 
N.Y., almost 70 years ago.  My fellow schoolmates, at home party 
mates, street corner hangin' 'round mates. date mates, and just 
plain mates were black, brown, yellow, and white (Greek, Irish, 
Puerto Rican, Southern Slave descendants, Formosa asylum 
seekers, Jews, and whatnots) - and if we'd had a few reds I 
don't believe any would have noticed.  One of the advantages of 
youth is ethnic-blindness.  Sadly my folks (mother) feared 
racial confrontation and I was subjected to "white flight."  For 
some years afterward I missed my friends but eventually I became 
part of the white ghetto and my new personal interests left me 
there in oblivion.
