High-profile Toronto lawyer Clayton Ruby has been retained to free Lucy
the elephant from Edmonton's Valley Zoo.
"I have been retained to look into the Lucy problem and find a
solution," Ruby confirmed Thursday.
Ruby's involvement in the case was revealed at a news conference in
Edmonton where former TV game-show host Bob Barker called for Lucy to
be sent to a California sanctuary.
Barker has been lobbying the city since last winter to ship Lucy to a
sanctuary in San Andreas, Calif., run by the Performing Animal Welfare
Society.
She would live in a 12-hectare enclosure with four other female Asian
elephants.
But the zoo has said Lucy is too sick the make the journey.
Barker said PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) had
hired Ruby to find a legal way to remove Lucy from the Valley Zoo.
Barker, the retired host of The Price is Right, told the news
conference he doesn't accept the facility's argument that the aging and
ailing Asian elephant is not fit to travel.
"We want them to talk to people . . . and come to terms with the fact
that Lucy is not going to get better at the zoo."
Lucy's breathing problems mean it's too dangerous to move her from the
Valley Zoo, officials said this week.
Zoo veterinarian Dr. Milton Ness said this week that the stress of such
a trip would make it so hard for her to get enough oxygen that it might
kill her.

Why doesn't the Barker group bring Lucy a companion?
