Weight gainers??
Me again

I saw my GP this morning and he said I needed to loose about 2 stone to
take me down to the right weight for my height but I've just read a
message on UPSD that says Zyprexa (Olanzapine) is a weight gainer... I
realise you aren't medical bods and can't give medical advice, I'm just
after some opinions please!

I take Zyprexa, Citalopram, own brand multivitamins and own brand
calcium with magnesium (as I can't get the calcium and magnesium from
anywhere else as I'm allergic to dairy) every night and I'd like to get
off the Citalopram as I don't feel depressed any more (my GP is
referring me to a CPN for their opinion about coming off the
Citalopram).

I don't suppose any of you know which, if any, of those 4 pills are
weight gainers? I ain't going to come off the Zyprexa even if it is
the only weight-gainer I take 'cos it stops the psychosis wonderfully
and I haven't been fruitloop since taking it!

I know you can't give medical advice, I'm just looking for some
opinions is all! :o)

You're like me, too short for my weight. I should be about 9 feet
tall :) Citalopram isn't a weight gainer per se, BUT it increases the
desires for naughty foods (it does in me anyhoo) and I don't need
encouragement in the first place! Most anti-psychotics have an
effect on appetite, Take a peek at http://www.psycheducation.org/hormones/Insulin/weightgain.htm

Oh and you need Vitamin D with your calcium btw. It's required by the
body to fix the calcium.

Q10: Should I stop taking ZYPREXA if I gain weight?

A10: As with any prescription medicine, you should not stop taking
ZYPREXA without first talking to your doctor. Medicine is an important
part of treatment to help you manage your symptoms. Leaving your
symptoms untreated could be harmful to your health and quality of life.
If you have concerns, talk with your doctor. The decision about whether
you should keep taking ZYPREXA should be made based on discussions
between you and your doctor.

People taking ZYPREXA may gain weight and should have their weight
checked regularly while taking ZYPREXA. To minimize your potential for
gaining weight, you should follow a healthy, balanced diet and get
regular exercise.

Lilly also makes resources available, free of charge, that provide
ongoing support to people taking ZYPREXA. These materials can help you
manage your diet, become more active, and cope better with stress. Ask
your doctor or healthcare professional if you are interested in these
free resources.

Might be worth seeing your GP .

You just need to grow a bit :)

<Usual disclaimers about my not being a medical professional.>

A couple of stones doesn't sound too bad. Under the circumstances it
sounds like you should keep on taking the drug, but mention your
concerns about weight gain next time you see your GP.

Are your walks with Fergus helping? Perhaps he could 'torture' you more
often :)

Wow, some big rocks you have there. Maybe you should blame yourself for
being such a good eater. :)

It was my GP that weighed me... I'm not that bothered by it now I know
it's prolly the Zyprexa causing it! I'd like to be the right weight
but not being psychotic is more important!

Apparently I've put *on* weight since I was last weighed! lol
