But maybe being depressed makes people more likely to go for processed
food in the first place .
You feel depressed so you have a pizza that makes you depressed so you
have another pizza........?!

A cynic might sneer that processed food and depression are both
'luxuries', not available to people in a subsistence society, and it's
therefore not surprising that statistically they seem to be related.
I'm surprised they reckon the British diet is getting nutritionally
poorer. Other reports claim that the (Gordon-Brown-created) recession
has caused a large upswing in the sale of more nutritional food such as
fresh veggies.

I seldom buy fresh veggies. I used to when my wife was alive and there
was two of us to feed but getting a good variety of veg just for one
and using it before it goes past it's best is problematic.
I therefore stock my freezer up with an assortment of frozen veg.

Agreed. If you have access to a large supermarket you can buy one or two
of each of what you want from the 'choose your own' containers. I'd
guess that Tesco Express doesn't have room for a large selection, and
taking the time to choose from the loose selection in a busy supermarket
is something you'd find overwhelming in your current state, especially
doing it every 2-3 days.

That's a good second best. Some frozen veg is actually better for you
than 'supermarket fresh'.
