I think whether change happens or not is really down to whether the
emotional response to a given situation in the first place was natural and
appropriate or not.
I'm unsurprised that a biological or psychodynamic remedy might work for
people who are depressed with nothing to be depressed about. If you can
legitimately reduce it to an issue of biochemistry or memory, then it
follows that the 'obvious' cures will work.
I'm also equally unsurprised that the vast majority of people who are
depressed and generally unresponsive to conventional treatments tend to be
the ones who actually have untold quantities of shit going on in their
lives. In such cases, depression is surely the *symptom*, not the cause.

Aye, I agree...the symptom and not the cause. There's no doubt that
some folks suffer more than their fair share of the raw side of Life
and a number of things 'going wrong' one after the other gives less
time to recover from the one before...it can be overwhelming, and I
can see so easily how someone could slip from a 'normal' depressed
state into that of a clinical depression.
I think if a person is lucky enough to be surrounded by close family
and friends it's half the battle to recovering from
depression.......not sure where the hypnotherapy thing came from, i
guess it must have been something I was reading about that mentioned
that when clinically depressed/ anxious, people develop negative
thoughts and I suppose it was something which is purported to help
change the 'negative thoughts'.......it wouldn't work for everyone, of
course and it also wouldn't change circumstances, such as poor
health....bad housing....unemployment.....loss or break-up with a
loved one for instance.....but it might help some people deal with
things such as anxiety, sense of worthlessness, feelings of
hopelessness.
