OT: Playing with Linux
I finally found a distro that I can cope with. I have much to learn, but
so far so good. This is my first attempt at posting on usenet

Hello :-)
Usually, one would post a test message to alt.test or similar.
Not that I'm complaining that you decided to post here, just curious. I
take it you feel this newsgroup has something to offer you?
One thing, though - you're not posting from the root account on your
Linux box? It's not a wise idea to be doing that. Your normal user
account that you use for doing things shouldn't be the root account.
Only log in as root when you need to do maintenance - and don't use it
at all if you're going on-line.
Rowland.

It was me (back in Windows at the moment). When I find a more easily
configurable newsreader that I like I'll sort out the from header.
The distro is Puppy Linux. This is the first one I've tried that I could
manage to get online with, and there seem to be some very helpful people in
the forums.

Hi there Csaenemy,
I've been using Ubuntu for around the last 2 years on and off, switching
between that and WinVista (pants) whenever I've needed to.
The free install disk has 3 install options: Live, where the distro runs
only from the CD, Full install or the much more user friendly option of
installing it into a Windows folder on yer C:\ drive, thus allowing you to
uninstall Ubuntu by using the the Windows uninstall facility.
Using Vista I am told that I cannot use the Aero desktop, because my
Graphics card is too weedy, But Ubuntu allows me to run all the desktop
goodies (which are considerable). What I don't really understand is how
Microsoft can charge the astronomical price it does only to demand that
users upgrade their hardware! Whereas, Ubuntu does all Vista can (and much,
much more) using less resources and lower spec hardware. Plus all the
software is free - a couple of clicks and Bob's yer uncle - 1000's and
1000's of programs to do absolutely anything you want, just waiting for you
to click on it and download.
Go and have a squint at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC5uEe5OzNQ
Stay well,
Prot.

I haven't used Seamonkey, but I think the usenet part is based on
Thunderbird, isn't it? Knode and Pan are the longest-established GUI
newsreaders for Linux. I took a look at XPN a while ago and it wasn't at
all bad. The author reads news.software.readers.

Good. That's an interesting distro (but I'm a Mandriva user at present).
Take a look at uk.comp.os.linux as a general Linux discussion forum -
there are users of a variety of distros posting there. The main thing is
to have fun with Linux :))

Very pretty, but a million miles from where I am at the moment. Give me

Yes, the browser part seems pretty good, but I'm working on getting Opera
plugins to function as that's my browser of choice. I'd prefer to get away
from web based mail and newsreaders though

It is fun, but as a complete noob, I'm dipping in and out until I can make
more of my regular programs functon (or at least find compatible
equivalents)

I like Pan but I now use evolution which does me fine for both usenet
and email, including imap which many emailers don't handle very well.

I found puppy quite hard to use but that might just be me. Also it seems
to store the file system strangely. I've found ubuntu to be by far the
best and usable distro although even they leave the new user with some
interesting puzzles! I've also tried suse but don't like that one at
all.
But linux is fun, there's no doubt about that!

I'm using Claws Mail for email (including IMAP with GMX.com) but its
usenet features are too basic for my taste. Kmail is a good email client,
but I found Evolution too complex.

It's designed to be very small and quick - it can be installed on a USB
'stick' and load the entire system into RAM when booted. It will run
on quite small or old systems, too. It may not take too kindly to being
'customised', as a result of that design.

Mandriva is the one that clicks with me; I think it's probably the most
newbie-friendly of them all, yet can satisfy 'power users' too.

Opera plugins? I don't know if Opera can be installed on Puppy at all.

That's "Flash". If you have that installed on your Puppy system, you'll
have to tell Opera where it is. The plugin path on my Opera is
/usr/lib/opera/plugins:/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
Opera Tools - Preferences - Content - Enable plug-ins - Plug-in options
If Flash isn't installed, either get the Puppy package for it if there is
one, or go to
<http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash>.
The Linux installer there should work, I think - Opera can use the same
plugin as "Firefox/Mozilla". The Puppy forums or the Opera newsgroups
might be worth looking to if you want help.
There is a Free and Open Source Flash player called Gnash, which has
plugins for Firefox and Konqueror. I don't know if it works with Opera,
but I have it working with Firefox here. There are some Flash web pages
which don't work properly, or at all, with Gnash - the Gnash programmers
are obliged to reverse-engineer every change in the closed-source software
so there's inevitably a lag. I haven't got Gnash to work with YouTube.

I've been busy with other things, and have only just come back to this.
At least my name should display properly now.
Incidentally, I tried Ubuntu Linux, but could not make my wireless
connection work. It's a shame, because it looks quite easy to use and
the layout and filesystem is much closer to what I've been used to with
Windows. I shall press on with Puppy, I am gradually getting used to it
and it's incredibly fast.

I'm surprised about the wireless connection on ubuntu. I was expecting
problems but I put in a usb dongle and after a half a minute or so and
doing nothing else, I could click on the network symbol on the top right
of the desktop and it gave me the choice of connecting to my network or
various ones of my neighbours'. I typed in the key and it's worked
reliably ever since. I did the same thing with a different manufacturers
dongle and that worked fine as well.
Puppy is nice but I find it a bit too limited.
I've just downloaded "dreamlinux" to see what that's like but I suspect
I'll stay with my "Hardy Heron".

I identify my router, I type in the key, it searches for a while and
then the whole thing seizes up and I have to reboot. Very frustrating.
