Firefox
This happens far too often and I have to go to task scheduler to manually
close the process - sooo annoying. I wonder if there's something else I can
do to stop this happening?

XP, Vista or Windows 7?
I used to get that occasionally in Vista, but I've not seen it (yet) in Win
7.

Firefox stopped dead here in Win7 the other night and the only way out
was to do a reboot.
Win7 itself was still working OK.

What are you doing when it happens? are you in Fx and click on a link or
in an email program and click a link or clicking on a link on your desktop?
Do you have Fx set up to open new links in a Tab or a new Window?

I've reverted to Opera or SeaMonkey and only use Firefox now and again
since it stopped dead here the other night.

I've already signed out (closed down) of Firefox when this happens Steve,
then sometimes after clicking a link say in a ng post that message pops up.

I don't like Opera, but I will try SeaMonkey. FF sometimes doesn't display
stuff either and I've been having to view pages via the IE tab!

Ah OK, its probably Fx hanging when you close it down go here and have a
read:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+hangs#Hang_at_exit
and go to 'Hang at exit' in the table of contents.

How do you launch Firefox, Val? A possible cause of that happening is
by clicking more than once on a program icon or shortcut if you've got
Windows set to 'single click'.

Try disabling Java (not javascript) in Firefox (Tools>Options>Content).
I haven't enabled it in this new installation and so far all has been
sweetness and light and only one website has said I need it so I just used
one of my add-ons (IE View 1.4.4) to switch to IE8 to view that particular
page.
No great hardship.

I've never seen that message before, but when I clicked on your link, it
came up for real! Except there was a 'Close' button on the dialogue box.
How did you do that?

I'm not sure I understand you but I used Windows snipping tool to capture
the message and uploaded via IE

I mean, for the first time in my experience, my copy of Firefox produced
that error, just as it displayed your image of the error message.
The "How did you do that?" was intended as a joke, implying you had
somehow affected my machine by sympathetic magic.
Just possibly it was really produced by my double-clicking whenonly a
single click was necessary.

Val, something like that happens to me quite often
when I try to open Firefox.
I simply click OK and then proceed to open Firefox again
with no problem.
At this point, that's the least of my worries with my computer.
It's always doing strange things, necessitating a reboot.
My son "fixed" it, but every once in a while it hiccups.
I hate to bother him again. So I just keep rebooting when
necessary. I have Windows XP.

PS-At least after reading this thread, I understand why
the problem occurs.
Simply stated, it happens because "Firefox hangs". :)

When I click OK tho Firefox doesn't open it just sends up the same message

I get that too. Don't click OK in the message box, go to the task bar, right
click the Firefox prog, and select close.

When I click OK, Firefox closes.
Then I click to open it again and it opens.

Have you tried Fx 3.6 B1
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-beta.html
might be worth seeing if it helps.
Its very stable Ive been using it for a couple of weeks with no issues
at all, if you are into 'eye candy' you might want to look at the new
