Nutrients Improved IQs in Children
In a double-blind trial lasting 3 months, school-aged children were
given a low-dose vitamin and mineral tablet providing 50% of the USRDA
for most essential nutrients, including iron, chromium, zinc,
manganese, selenium, copper, and molybdenum.(1) The subjects were
primarily Hispanic children ranging in age from 6 to 12 years. There
were substantial gains observed in measurement of IQ scores in
approximately 20% of children receiving the supplements. While the
study did not link specific nutrients to improved IQ scores, the
authors concluded that such gains could have resulted from improvement
in overall nutrient status.
