changing hard disk
here's the story............
got hold of a sata 2.5in laptop drive wd1600bevs, windows sees it, used it
to store media files.
Thought I would try to install in either my sky+ thomson 160gb or my luxor
250 gb pvr
Bought a sata to ide adapter which i used on my pc to see the drive, all ok.
Used copy + to place all of my recorded programs onto 2.5 disk, no problem,
all copied ook
placed the adapter on the disk and connected to sky+ but nothing showed on
tv, placed a jumper on
2.5 disk for slow power up and the sky box booted ok and could watch sky
progs but not record or see copied programmes on the epg.
formatted disk as fat32 and connected to luxor 250 gb pvr both disks sata
the original is 3.5 250gb
tried all sorts of ways to read disk but even though I could use luxor box
there was no hard disk shown in setup.
anybody any clues why not, the 2.5 sata connected ok to the luxor(straght
cable swap.)

Re: changing hard disk
Different PVRs use different disk formats to store programmes. For
example, my Pace Twin uses STAVS (IIR the acronym C) ...
	http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/TwinRIP/
... my Panasonic HD/DVD recorder uses its own proprietary format which
is similar to the DVD-RAM format ...

http://www.macfh.co.uk/JavaJive/AudioVisualTV/PanasonicDMRE100H/PanasonicDMRE100HHardDisks.html
... Dreamboxes and some others use Linux as the Operating System and
therefore Linux disk formats ...
	http://www.dream-multimedia-tv.de/en/dm-8000-hd-pvr

Not sure what $ky and Luxor use, but it's quite possibly not a Windows
format, and if you haven't already you should check this point out
before you do anything else.

appreciate that, but as far as i'm aware fat32 is what most os's can see .
in the luxor, it's a straight swap sata for sata except one drive is 3.5 the
other 2.5. the luxor has a format utility but it deosn't seem to be able to
format the disk.

Re: changing hard disk
Sky+ and Sky HD receivers cannot recognise the FAT16, FAT32 or
NTFS formats.

Sky+ uses the proprietary XTV format.

The Copy+ utility should format the drive automatically.
However, I suspect you might need to use the file conversion
option in http://www.skycopyplus.co.uk/instructions35.php to use
your drive with a "Big-Endian" or "Little Endian CPU" (depending
upon the make and model of your receiver). You will find
instructions at www.skycopyplus.co.uk/instructions.php.

Incidentally, the FAQ at
www.skycopyplus.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=131&hilit=NTFS
states:

"Please do NOT format your destination disk. Initialise it, but
do NOT format it

If you have formatted it NTFS, use Windows Disk Management to
delete the partition. Copy+ does all its own formatting to the
special XTV format used by Sky. It only recognises initialised
UN-formatted disks as valid destinations. This ensures it never
overwrites existing volumes on your system."

If necessary, you could seek detailed help on one of the Copy+
forums at www.skycopyplus.co.uk/forum/index.php - or you could
contact Copy+ at www.skycopyplus.co.uk/contact.php.

Re: changing hard disk
Just because FAT32 is understood by both Windows and Linux is
absolutely no guarantee that a PVR will understand it, though a poster
here suggests that a variant of it is what $ky+ uses ...
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=186426
... however, such is the general uncertainty in the thread that I'm
not sure that suggestion is trustworthy. Even if it is, it's one
thing to successfully retrieve video off a hard-disk, quite another to
format one from new with self-consistent information containing video
data that will be understood and read by a PVR, and allow further
programmes to be recorded by it without corrupting the pre-existing
programmes.

As formatting with Linux, you could download and burn any of the Linux
Live CDs/DVDs and use that to format a disk in ext2/3 or reiferfs, but
why go to all that trouble if you haven't even been able to establish
what format is used by the PVR?

I would have thought the first thing would be to insert a blank disk
in each PVR, format it using the PVR, record one or two programmes
onto it, and then examine the format at sector level in a PC. That
might tell you what format it really is. You could then work from
there.

Re: changing hard disk
Fat 32 has a four gb limit of course due to the number of bytes used to
describe the space used, so I'd doubt any pvr uses this format.

I have used all the different ways to present the files on the disk by using
copy+ but I think the sky box can't see the disk because there is no way to
use cable select like you do with an IDE disk in a sky+ box.

That's the maximum size of individual files; it would be possible to
store a program as multiple files.
