Freeview HD Rollout
Here's the BBC's planned rollout for Freeview HD...

Manchester and Liverpool will be the first cities to get Freeview HD,
said Graham Plumb, Head of Distribution Technology at BBC Operations.
This will happen on 2 December, when the free HD signal will be
switched on at the Winter Hill transmitter.

Freeview HD will eventually be rolled out across the entire length and
breadth of the UK, but the timescale for this remains hazy.

Plumb added that although London isn't scheduled to switch over from
analogue to digital until 2012, plans to upgrade the Crystal Palace
transmitter for Freeview HD have been inked for December this year.

Freeview HD will use the MPEG 4 codec - standard-definition Freeview
uses MPEG 2 - to encode content, which will be transmitted using the
DVB-T2 digital broadcasting system. To watch the BBC's Freeview HD
programming, viewers will need new set-top boxes.

A further "four main transmitters" will also be upgraded during the
first half of next year, Plumb said, but the BBC is keeping
transmitter names and exact upgrade dates close to its chest until
"plans are a bit firmer".

And how much would a Freeview HD receiver cost? Not cheap, I'll bet.

I don't think any are available properly in the shops yet are they?

Not that I know of but rather than be expensive like all new tech,
they'll have to be competitively priced otherwise they'll just get
ignored, given that regular Freeview boxes are less than £20 for the
cheapest, and because the average viewer doesn't understand HD and can
barely get to grips with widescreen itself when you see the way some
TVs are set up.

Won't current Bravia HD TVs be able to receive Freeview HD without an external
receiver?

I watch Dutch cable HD without an external receiver. The external receivers cost
about twice the price of a normal external receiver in the Netherlands.

No they won't! They can receive HD in many countries in the EU but *NOT*
in the UK!

As the UK is the first country to adopt the (brand new) DVB-T2 transmission
system there are almost no chipsets capable of receiving this standard yet -
and certainly none built into the tuners of *any* existing IDTVs or STBs!

That means it will be three times as much over here. Frankly somebody
should have had the balls and decided we would skip the whole SD digital
switch and did what the U.S. did and switched from analogue to HD
digital.

If it means a new development because the standard adopted is different to the
rest of Europe.
In general set top boxes are substantially cheaper in UK than here.

and stuck with the standard adopted by the rest of Europe.

That article is out of date as now Liverpool won't get it until
later in 2010. As a Mancunian I am pleased that we'll be getting
HD first as well as being one of the first areas to get BT's high
speed broadband!

or from the horse's mouth so to speak.
http://www.freeview.co.uk/freeview/Services/Freeview-HD

OTOH you will be expected to pay lots for a receiver, because you will be
amongst the first.

There is already one HD channel available via Freesat. http://www.freesat.co.uk/

Yeah, that'd work(!) How would we record HD on standard SD equipment?

The 3 Dutch public channels Netherlands 1, 2 & 3 switched from analogue to SD
and HD.

If they do both, that's one thing, but if it was HD-only that wouldn't
be right.

Yes, I did think about mentioning the "delights" of being an early adopter
such as paying over the odds for the equipment and doing beta testing for
free!
