Warwickshire Greenbelt
I appreciate that there is a certain amount of NIMBY-ism associated with
protests over new housing, but the threat to greenbelt land, which often are
important wildlife corridors, is increasing due to pressure from developers.

Thanks for posting this Chris, it's a pet subject of mine. I'll reply
properly tomorrow with my thoughts on it, which are basically, stop
concreting over our countryside.

Well you've got little enough green land left in your neck of the woods -
you must fight to preserve what's left! Surely there are loads of brownfield
sites in the area that could be redeveloped for housing, without destroying
the countryside?

Apart from a couple of cities, we're the only county without a
National Nature Reserve. Birmingham's got two, and Cumbria's
got two dozen or more.

Is there anywhere in Warwickshire that you'd consider special enough to
designated as such?

My back garden! ;-)

We do have places like Charlecote Park and the like, but they are managed
estates, not wildlife reserves. There are lots of farms too. Off the top of
my head I couldn't name one sizable forest or wood or heath that could be a
wild habitat......and that pretty much rules out my back garden as well.
That's a shame because I could have sold the lawn mower on eBay.

Shame about that bloody big Rolls-Royce facility with its test beds right
next to it! Still, look on the bright side, I get to work near to an
impressive stately home.

<sheepish grin>

It's too 'managed' in one sense, but you're right it has some significant
areas of water and weirs with Herons and other water fowl. The main entrance
road, which I pass every day, is looking mighty impressive if the sun is out
first thing in the morning.

I could also nominate the countryside out towards Hatton Locks if it weren't
for the railway line. However, canals are important wildlife corridors.

Not to mention one of very few inland breeding sites for Great Cormorant.

<impressed>

I did not know that. I just googled for ornotholigical marvels at
Coombe......and mostly read a lot of stuff about fishing.

Also, we do get a few lesser spotted Wood Peckers in the trees around the
R-R Ansty site and I never made the connection with Coombe Abbey before.
