Yesterday (Saturday) I went to a wedding in the Queen's Stand at Epsom racecourse. It was opened by Brenda a few years ago. What a fabulous venue it is! One could almost smell the money that went into that place. Judging by the sumptuous luxury in the function rooms my guess is that the Jockey Club got their moneys worth. I'm sure the huge machines in the vast weighing room were gold plated. The views from the dining room were amazing. The London Eye and the arch at Wembley were clearly visible. The security staff (a lot of them, too) were amazingly helpful to a near cripple like me. They even insisted that I use the spacious open lift that the Queen mum used to use. A sign in the cloakroom intrigued me. The management regretted that they were unable to accept responsibility for looking after top hats. Having a journo's nose I just had to ask why. It seems that tophats can cost upwards of GBP500 nowadays! And that's for a cheap one. They can cost as much as GBP1000 each! I've an idea my morning hat went to a charity shop. Excellent food by the in-house catering staff. About 200 guests had a wail of a time. Shame I don't touch alcohol. The way the bubbly stuff was flowing I could've been spliced out of my mind by 1800, and on my way to a lost weekend by midnight. A great time. -- James Follett
