Which Hotel to stay in on Barra Island?
I can recommed this place:
http://www.castlebayhotel.com/index.php
..but not this place:
http://www.isleofbarrahotel.co.uk/
Trust me, the managment of the first place are very very sound and
authentic, the second, south african weirdos with a patronising
manner. The Isle of Barra hotel may have a sandy beach view...but the
service at the Castlebay is the best you're going to get whilst paying
money for something. Respect. CastleBay town itself is like something
from the 1970's - in a good way, like going through timewarp..its like
you are in a film, unreal, like The film Ring of Bright Water.
Seriously. The community there, and elsewhere on the hebridies, is
like nowhere else in the UK, its quite emotionally actually to
experience it - no need for all those Blairite community policing
measures, for CCTV and all the rest of it. In fact seeing this place
made me think that the more these police state measures are brought
in, the more genuine community cohesion and respect will be
undermined. Go and see for yourself if you've not been there. And if
on Barra, stay at the Castlebay, excellent food, excellent service.
All you need to make the place perfect, people of Barra, is to plant
the interior of the island with native trees, having siezed control of
tenure. (By the means of Non Violent Direct Action)
Blessings.

Err, Barra's never had trees - native or otherwise.

Tell me, as you clearly know so much about Barra, what kinds of trees do
you think would grow in the "interior of the island"?

Bonzoi hawthorn (Ctrataegus somethingorotherus) might survive indoors.
Hope this helps.

Oh well,
At least I tried.
Environmental management was always a thankless task I found.

Re: Which Hotel to stay in on Barra Island?
many without extensive grazing as is shown by the tiny area of
woodland to the north of the island. it really wood b amazing for
barra to b wooded as for sure it naturally wood b. yes the outer
hebridies have been mostly treeless for a long time, 1000's of years,
population pressure and managment techique being significant issues.
(see: permaculture). awareness and control of land r prime corrective
factors. it wood b kinda nice to c extensiv (rather that tokenistic)
collective forests. all the best

Go away.
This isn't your wee pals cell-phone.
If you want to discuss environmental management issues try replying in
decent English - just out of respect for yourself and others if nothing
else.

I resisted the temptation to sign myself off as A W-S BSc env mngt, and
pointng out that I supervised the planting of close on half a million native
trees in the west coast.

...but you like to keep most of it for perverted blightyworld
landowner games, yah?
The ACTUAL FACT OF THE MATTER is that native trees grow perfectly
well on the Outer Hebridies, as can be seen when folks fence in an
area, particularly examplifed by the geezer in South Uist whos life
labour has been planting trees such as rowan and ash on his 100 acres
of so croft..and it truely is amazing! Like a sanctuary, a different
world, much much earlier growing season due to the shelter also. Wild
birds singing, incredible. I'd say where it is, by they like their
privacy I think, if you're on the island ask around and I'm sure
you'll sus it out. Not everyone on the islands masturbates towards
sheep farming and perv.

So you should know better. AS I WAS SAYING BEFORE FOOLS LIKE YOU AND
MIperv interupted, native trees grow very well in fact on the Outer
Hebridies, when allowed, but this process has not been allowed for
several millenia due to overpopulatioon in earlier times and over/
extensive grazing now for sheep and blightyperv deer parks. It was
rather amazing to see an indigenous fellow so hostile to sheep..but of
course as anyone who has read any island history will know, that
wasn't so a couple of hundred years ago, when anti sheep ranch
consciousness was prevalant.
Oh and by the way MIperv, you owe me scum.
