schools (popular or good)
I think it odd that today's BBC reports about wicked parents lying about
believing in God to get their kids into schools, is describing the schools
as 'popular.'

Surely it would be more accurate to describe the schools they want their
kids to go to as either 'competent' or even 'educationally successful'?

Perhaps they are popular because they are either 'competent' or even
'educationally successful', or perhaps both.
