On your Bike.
Hello,
I've just got my new bike, with a view to improve my fitness after a
close encounter with an angioplasty.
I'm in Totton, and the prospect of cycling on the commuter routes into
Southampton is pretty scarey. Does
anyone know of any internet resources to help cyclists in Hampshire to
avoid traffic danger/fumes?

Yikes. About the only way is to head for Ashurst and go the back
roads to Hythe, then take the ferry.

CTC?
http://www.ctc.org.uk/
Or Sustrans?

Good luck. I know I ought to cycle to work - but the idea of a 5-mile
section of A road with no pavement (tarmac then hedge) doesn't fill me
with enthusiasm!

Put yourself and your bike on the train at Totton, get off at
Southampton. You can still cycle the last bit.....

http://www.opencyclemap.org/ shows the cycleways and cycle lanes
around Totton and Southampton.
You can actually cycle almost all the way from Lyndhurst to
Southampton using cycleways, segregated paths and residential
roads. Similarly there is a route at right angles that almost
connects Morrisions to Hounsdown. It should be possible to get
from almost anywhere in Totton to Southampton Central railway
station without using main roads.
