A splendid machine - they also had a 3-wheel Enigma in Portsmouth Dockyard a
few years ago but I understand it is now on show elsewhere.

Anyone know where (In the UK) I can see one of the few 5-wheel Enigma
machines?

You state on your details page that the "magic number" of passengers would
be 27 so i assume this would be a break even figure and naturally you would
not subsidise the coach hire from your own money (rightly so), at £17 per
person that would be £459 so that pays for the days coach hire --- assuming
a normal 53 seat coach is used and you fill it that will be another 26
passengers at £17 per person that would be £442 profit even if you only got
37 passengers you would still get a profit of £170 NOT A BAD RETURN FOR A

Too many assumptions. 29 seater coach is £466 , for minimum liability to
myself.
You can try and get a guaranteed 53 people to fill a coach with liability of
£600 to £700 hanging over you - not me.

I wonder why some people always assume that when somebody organises a
function or a trip, they are out make a profit. I think £17.00 per head for
a trip to Bletchley Park Museum is very reasonable, if you make a profit, so
what. I am the chairman of a social committee, and any profit I make cuts
the cost of the next function. People that make these assumptions are
usually out to make a profit themselves and get upset if they think someone
else has beaten them to the draw. I think Mr Bird needs to get a life and
take a long hard look at himself, and maybe change his name to Victor
Meldrew.

Indeed. I remember seeing it there.

A friend of mine (Paul Reuvers) has the largest collection of original
Enigma machines in the world (over 30 I believe at the last count) and is
probably the world's foremost expert on the subbject (being consultant to
Bletchley Park museum). Unfortunately he's based in Holland though, but his
website is at http://www.xat.nl/enigma/index.htm

He's just given me an Enigma-E machine as a kit, which I hope to build
soon. (http://www.xat.nl/enigma-e/) but he has some excellent software
emulations (at the first link above) which you can download for free.

I'd be interested in the trip, but I'm not sure I could get to Southampton
by 7.30am (knowing how intermittent trains are around here on Sundays) :-(

Indeed, and the train from here (or petrol for that matter) would no doubt
be a lot more than £17 return.

I'd say good on Nigel for organising it, and just a pity I don't think I'll
be able to go myself.

Personally I'm a bit more interested in the Colossus rebuild, but I'll look
at that Dutch site

I downloaded this large file on the Colossus rebuild
http://www.codesandciphers.org.uk/documents/newman/newman.pdf
and hope I can find time to peruse it in detail before visiting Bletchley,
and also the maths behind the decoding from the files on the BP site.

Indeed - although I'm not sure I have the room to rebuild one of those. ;-)

I can recommend the book "Colossus" by B.Jack Copeland (ISBN 0-19-284055-X)
which gives quite a good account of Colossus and Bletchley.

If you ever get the chance to visit the Southampton RISC OS User Group
meetings (second Tuesday in the month at Itchen College, room S1 I think -
next one on 14th October) I'll see if I can bring the Enigma-E along
sometime.
