Taken at an iron age fort?

Was it taken in the '70s? That was a very beige time.

IIRC it's somewhere around Bournemouth.

It would have been late 70's. Now they're in their late 70's. So it still is
a very beige time, if you see what I mean.

I sometimes wonder if it's compulsory to wear beige once you reach 70, or if
it's just the colour-sensitive part of people's brains that shuts down.

Well it doesn't soothe me - it irks me when I think of all those lovely,
vibrant colours that are out there, and what do people choose? Beige! Urgh.
How unimaginative. Anyway Edith, you're not 70 yet, and since you're an
artist I wouldn't expect you EVER to want to wear beige. Or are you trying
to tell us your brain is shutting down already? (There are those who visit
this newsgroup who might say that this is the case, but I couldn't possibly
comment.)

No, not really. I don't wander about dressed in camoflage. I guess if you
have to have soldiers, and they have to be able to hide in the landscape,
then camoflage is what they need to wear, but it's not something I
particularly enjoy looking at.
I do like natural colours, but give me bright leaf greens, warm autumn
russets, deep rich browns like the forest floor, the startling blue of a
summer sky reflected in a lake, the flash of red of a robin's breast.
Not beige. Where does beige occur in nature anyway? In dead things, that's
where. Straw perhaps, or the stubble after a field has been harvested;
grass, dry after a drought.

It happens about the same time you find it difficult to tie your shoelaces

I wear brown shoes at work. I agree with the Italians that black shoes are
for funerals.
The rest of the time I wear motorcycle boots, Doc Martins, converse allstars
or flip flops.

I have a beige v-neck cashmere sweater. I lurve it. I wear it with black
trousers or skirts or jeans and it looks good. I also have a beige
wool camel coat that is a bit too big for me these days which I wear

Orly and I have been together for 20 years too. Now that he's past 40, I'm thinking of swapping him for two 20 year olds.

Let me see now. I have a white dressing gown on now and a pair of Orly's thick dark beige socks. Does that count for anything?

There, you see. Your posting is sticking to mine. Why does it do that? Could it be the beige glue?
Beige has to do with natural colours given to us from nature. Have ye no heerd of the very tasteful tweeds, ma wee hen?

I used to have a beige wool camel coat. It was a hum-dinger. War it over my fancy dresses in mesh nylon and stiletto times. Bell of

Goodness. Those are a lot more technical than simple converse boots, aren't
they? But then again, what were the predecessors of these players wearing
back in the '50s?

That's a question I'd like to ask an awful lot of those women you see
tottering about on 2" heels, their big strong feet squeezed and squashed
into narrow shoes.
Docs at least look like they *ought* to be sensible, comfortable footwear,
and since I've never really grown out of being a tomboy I'd feel quite happy
with something like that on my feet on certain occasions. But I don't want
to wear shoes that hurt: I'd just like them to produce a slightly softer,
wider version that would fit me properly.

More or less, yes. When I see something that's turquoise, Steve usually
claims it's green. I treat turquoise as a separate colour, sort of halfway
between blue and green, but he seems to see things as either blue or green.
I was pleased to see that my son, who came to stay for a few days, tends to
see it the same way as I do. (Not really surprising, I suppose, since of
course he learned the names of colours, as a tiny child, from me!)

Find a sunny room with a mirror in a bright spot. Get out some clothes, or
fabric, or even paper, in a variety of colours, and try looking at yourself
in the mirror with different colours held below your chin. Different skins
suit differently coloured clothes. I tend to look a washout with that denim
blue near my face, for instance, but I look much healthier with reds and
oranges, and I'm OK with nice leaf greens. People with a richer skin tone
tend to look great with rich blues or turquoise. I think you'll find,
whatever colours look best on you, that pale things like beige will be the
ones that suit you least.

Yes, having worked with colour using both pigments and light, (i.e.,
coloured inks and computers) I know what you're getting at. When I'm
deciding on colours to use on a website, I'm thinking in RGB, but if I have
to get something printed, I have to go back to cyan, magenta & yellow. (And
turquoise is more or less cyan, isn't it?) I remember as a child, deciding
that adults were either liars or just plain wrong, when they told me that
mixing certain colours of paint would produce certain other colours. It
often just didn't work. They told us that red, blue and yellow were primary
colours, but it should have been cyan, magenta and yellow, shouldn't it?
(I don't know what a dye laser is, but now I think I want one.)

I have some dark brown sandals that have a bit of velcro to keep down the
end of the strap and I've *definitely* decided that it doesn't count.
Mind you, the last time I wore them was on a canal boat holiday along the
Llangollen and they got a bit 'minging' due to paddling in one of the
Shropshire lakes with my mate's kids whilst 'fishing' with nets on sticks.

Heh heh. I now have this delightful picture of you stomping over the hills
dressed in a coat of many colours. But you'd never have struck me as a

You're right. Interesting, though. And I didn't realise they'd made a verb
out of "laser" - "lasing" - gosh. It's as though the word "laser" means a
device which lases, but there was no such word until they came up with
"laser". I think I'm going round in circles here, so I shall desist.
