Sleeps
Hiya Sleeps. How are you? Has your cat come back yet. Does it still sit in a corner with it's left leg stuck up in the air,
scratching it's ba..self?
Have you been anywhere lately, done anything unusual? Are you flooded out?
Edith.

Yeah, he keeps coming back.

He stays in the kitchen these days - I hardly see him.

Nah, I never go anywhere or do anything. (That's why I'm so much fun. ;-)

It's probably warmest there and he can smell food.

LOL. Me too. I should get a cat for my kitchen. It could lick the plates clean so I wouldn't have to wash them.

I think he's just a miserble git.
As I was leaving the house today, he jumped down from the shed onto
the bins, and miaowed at me, so I paused to stroke his head, and he bit
my arm!

Ah. An Attack Cat. "Miserable git" just about sums these sort of cats up,
doesn't it? And this is the creature that's preventing you from going away
for a couple of days? He's certainly got the measure of you ...

In these hard times, that sounds like a good Christmas dinner. You could put a leg in the post.
I'm having guest for Christmas this year. I've bought pork ribs and I don't know how to prepare them. NO! Don't tell me. My son and
daughter have taken over the task, thank goodness. I'm ok with chops and medistekaker, but ribs....huh? Getting them to be crisp is
a work of art. We'll be 9 around the table this year and I'd better start getting things in order or I won't be done for Xmas.

Really? We tend to favour Turkey.
One year we had Goose, quite how one bird can contain such vast
quantities of fat is beyond me. It was like cooking Harry Secombe.
Initially we assumed that there was enough meat on it to easily feed
all 6 of us, only to find that post-roasting there was barely enough
to make a decent sandwich - it was rubbish.
However it far outweighs eating your actual guests....unless it's
Girls Aloud (MTGO). Mmmmm....just off to amend my list to Santa.
Excitedly,

I'm assuming here that you would like a painting from my son and that
you are not suggesting that I somehow create some artistry with my
willy? Certainly the former is possible, however I'll need to do some
testing to see if the latter is possible and I have to advise you
that, as all the males on here will concur, the level of control
needed to produce a work of art is not usually available in that area
of our anatomy, though I do know that given a decent size pot of Dulux
matt I can create something pretty spectacular.
I'll give it a go.

Eeerrrrrrm. That could be interesting but I think I'd prefer a painting from your son. It would be much less messy, I'm sure.

You should be able to. Even Elephants can paint pictures. They just wave the brush handle around. Have you tried it?

Well not recently. There is a marked difference between an Elephants
trunk and my willy, Edith (surprisingly). An Elephant tends to use his
trunk to lift heavy objects, clean himself, feed himself, and to lob
stones at passing Lions, thus building up a level of muscle and motor
skills that would enable him to succeed in painting a decent picture.
I, however, do none of these things with my willy, lifting heavy
objects and lobbing stones are completely out of the question and if I
could manage to feed myself I wouldn't be wasting my time writing this
post. I will try sellotaping a small brush on and attempt to paint
something Christmassy for you, but don't expect a Van Gogh or anything
similar - I'll need more practice to get to that standard, but I'm
willing to try.
Artistically,
Lou

Who knows. With a bit of practice you could be the next Picasso, Lou. I'm really looking forward to seeing this work of art of
yours, all Christmassy. I hope you don't hurt yourself. Please do be careful. You could be needing your paint brush next year too.
Edith, scouring over the crisp white snow, hoping to spy a glimpse of the little red post van, the big blond bringing her Lou's
masterpiece.

He should do what the people over the road did and just go off for a couple
of weeks. The neighbours will feed the cat and he'll 'adopt' them instead.

Get someone to buy you an espresso machine for Christmas, and just keep

We once had one of those roasts with a boned bird inside another boned bird.
The large one with turkey, goose, duck, pigeon and quail was tempting but we
didn't have enough family coming around...or neighbours....or days over
Christmas to eat the leftovers. Jeez, that would have been for life, not
just for Christmas.

I like garlic. It has to be fresh and in very small quantities. It would hardly chase Orly's South American family. Seems they were

Some people react badly to the smell of garlic on someone who has just eaten

No cat should be denied a new owner on a regular basis. Besides, it's a
challenge for the cat to break in new owners. It'll keep him young.
Our cats have always lived with us on the strict understanding that they
were really in charge and were only blessing us with their presence as long
as we kept on buying the *really* expensive cat food.
It's not even as if we're very good at catching birds. They're doing us a
favour by bringing us live(-ish) prey to flutter round the room leaving
blood all over the curtains.
The first cat we had was as hard as nails and people used to complain that
she attacked their dogs. The only creature she was afraid of was Billy the
Rabbit. This was mainly because Billy would try and hump the lawnmower never
mind something furry and playing 'hard to get'. The cat learnt from the
first couple of distressing encounters not to fall asleep in the garden.

Oh that's so 20th century. Roast great-aunt is the way to go these days.

Yeah we tried goose once when I was a kid. I do remember all that fat. It
wasn't even very nice fat. And even after it had all apparently melted off,
the meat was still greasy. Our neighbours keep geese, but they're in no
danger from me at Christmas, or any other time.

Blokes we have, all year 'round. Now, I have both. Woke up this morning and everywhere was white, chite!
Edith.
pst! Yud think he would dip it in majones or something, instead of Dulux matt. He could injure himself. btw-matt means, without a

That reminds me of the boy in the film where his dad picks up a rich 'bitch' from the hospital with memory loss, to look after him
and his family. He had worked on her luxurios yatch and she proved to be a pain in the neck and when he saw her face in the news
paper, she had had a bump on the head and couldn't remember who she was, he decided to get even, so he told her she was his wife,
Annie and took her home to a run down shack. In the end she falls in love with him. Great film. Great ending.

poor la'al mite. It's good of you to take care of him.
btw. Is my life different to yours?
I've been out in the snow, knocking poles into the ground, tying red bits of rag on then, marking how low the wall is now that
they've filled the platau with too much fill mass, so people don't drive over it and fall 4 meters down onto the neighbours road.
Gees!
and I've been in the wash room, throwing buckets of soapy water at the wall, getting it to swish out all the fluff and dust that
accumalates under the (things in there,) fluff from the washing machine and tumble dryer.

I've calmed him down considerably. I was able to cut the firmly
embedded gum out of the fur on his back leg while he slept (or
struggled to stay asleep).
As it stands, he knows he's not allowed to bite me in the house,
but outside, all bets are off.

With 10 pints swilled down, the lads around here can piddle all over the place. They needn't look for a long strech. They can even
twind it. Infact, if they follow the yellow lines, they'll find their way home again.

Cook? Does one cook them? I just deep freeze them then take them out of the freezer night before and let my kids do the rest.
There's talk about rubbing them in with salt and pepper and packing them in silver paper. I'm keeping out of the way when that's on.
Garanteed, it would turn out to be a fiasco if I were to do it. I manage the rest of the meal.
Our postman drives by in a 'Postman pat, red car. Drops off a bill once in a while.

For me, coming from a very nuclear family (mum, dad and me) with no other
close relatives, it's been a rare pleasure, only when I've been having
Christmas dinner with in-laws. This year it looks like there'll be three of
us. Oh well, we are the *best* three ...

I have cousins, but that's all. We don't meet for Christmas - just for the
occasional big family party (there are 10 of them in the the one family,
scattered around the globe.) Steve's relations are mostly down south - his
mum comes for Christmas most years but his dad's health is too poor to be
able to come to our house these days. We see him every week though.

Not the case in our family. In the years after my parents were too old to
cook us a Christmas dinner, we had to suffer through family dinners at
our house with my parents. We had very little in common with them so
there was only perfunctory conversation and awkward silences as we sat
around before the meal. At dinner they would insist on saying grace, talk
to the teenage kids like they were infants, and mom especially would
insist we that we should not have any wine, and complain that any music
the kids might want to play for them was 'too loud'. Any odours from the
cooking itself were somehow making it impossible for my mother to breath
(turkey fumes!). A fire in the fireplace was also somehow toxic and a
source of endless complaining. (Mom's a hypochondriac, not actually
harmed by any of those things.) All in all quite miserable experiences.
We even went so far as to leave the country and have Christmas with
friends in England twice during those years for some relief from it all.
So now we don't have to do that. Our favourite thing to do is get invited
to someone else's house for a big dinner. We are toying with the idea of
having a big Christmas party this year a couple of weeks before and
invite all the families we both work with. No decision on that yet though.

Fantastic idea. For many on here this could actually be termed their
'workplace' and as you are here too it could be said that we are also
your workmates. So just pop your address down J and we'll all be round
a couple of days before Xmas. Please ensure it snows, you have 120 can
of Tetley, and a vast amount of gifts.
Yours looking forwardly,
Lou

Johnny. One day you will be old and you'll recognise all these things within yourself. npi, really.
Edith-getting old-recognising-but not quite there yet.
It's always easier to take care of others' old parents than our own. We always expect more from our own old folks. I've made all the
mistakes and I wish I could have my parent here for Christmas now that I am happy.

The trouble is, we remember those parents when they were young and
able-bodied and full of energy, and seeing them as creaky, cranky old people
is a disappointment every time we look at them. People who meet them for the
first time in their elder years are more likely to see the good that's in
them because they don't have such high expectations.
But yes, wouldn't it be wonderful if we could have our parents back, just
for Christmas?

I have a picture of my parents when they were younger to remind me. I

I worked in a nursing home for two years. I should be trained to assert the different moods of the elderly. My mother's difficult
moods hurt me to anger. I couldn't manage it, to my deep shame.
What would I do.
What would I not do, to tell how I miss
A motherly love, a hug and a kiss.
What would I not do, to hold her again
And tell her I love her, that I am to blame.
What would I do, if she walked in the door
And told me to “not” throw my clothes on the floor.
How could I not, be gentle and kind
To a fragile old lady, forgetful, half blind.
What would I not do, to alter the date
To have her back with me, but now it's too late.
What can I do, to smother my guilt
Beg her forgiveness, have the scales tilt
This lady in pain, gave me life, now I vow
That I wish I had taken, more care of her, now.
Edith.

I'm already seeing things I have in common with my parents. But I am not
like them. They lived through depressions and war and were religious to
mention a few things. I don't have much in common with their life
experiences. Plus I have my own issues that they didn't have to deal
with. Yet there are still a few behaviours which I recognise as familiar.
Doesn't make me all that similar to them.
You also ignore the way seniors behave. They interact with non-relatives
completely differently than they do with their own kids.

How easily Edith forgets the fateful day that the cat co-habiting,
scratched, radio specialist dragged me kicking and screaming over to this
group.
It's a week away from two whole months ago. How time flies.

Wow. And you've stayed! Well done. Not everyone manages two months, but once
you've been here that long, I think we've well and truly sucked you in.
Let's have a party to celebrate your 2-month birthday.

It's yeast extract. Seems only fair to close the loop seeing as I consume so
much of the product that yields it.

Actually, when I was a child I loved Marmite sandwiches. My Mam said it was good for us. I haven't tasted it for many moons. I think
I would still like it. Perhaps it is a bit like treacle?

Only in that it's brown and a bit gloopy. Otherwise it's nothing at all like
treacle. Personally I can't stand it, but at least it doesn't have a
disgusting smell, like peanut butter for instance.

They're an acquired taste I think. I'd rather have bread, but since I can't
have bread I have to find an alternative.

A little girl had just finished her first week of school. 'I'm just
wasting my time,' she said to her mother. 'I can't read, I can't write,
and they won't let me talk!'

Looks good. My favourite chocolatier in Canada is Roger's Chocolates - HQ
in Victoria BC. I went into a gift shop last night and there was a rare
display of Roger's Chocolates this side of the Rockies. But I resisted.
