I was put off the bus today!
I didn't get past the driver because I was carrying a 5 litre tin of vinyl
emulsion! I thought it was a bit odd until I looked at

No. It just says that the paint contains 0.29% volatile organic contents. I
think they're worried about the lid coming off accidentally, which is a bit
odd considering the number of spoons I usually bend when I'm trying to open
a tin.

Hi

Strewth, the last person I saw bending spoons was Uri Geller, so you
must have psychic powers like him. 8^)

Yep, I think the H&S is an excuse, and it's more a case of

That seems to be it. I got this reply from the company:-

"Hello Keith,

Thank you for your email.

I have spoken with our Operations Director to obtain complete clarification
regarding the carriage of paint . He responds as follows:

"Regrettably, paint is potentially hazardous and therefore falls foul of
regulations for five reasons 1) If spilled it will make the platform very
slippy putting at risk the safety of customers 2) If spilled will disrupt
services as the bus will have to be withdrawn and replaced 3) If spilled
will put at risk property, clothing and could damage the bus flooring and
moquette 4) The paint if spilled may give off strong fumes 5) The paint may
be flammable.

However, if the paint isn't flammable, water based for example, and that
the tin or container is contained within a bund, and that the paint
container is a reasonable size, not 5 litres for example, a hold all or
similar and may contain any spillage - this may then be permissible.
However the final decision will rest with the driver who has the legal
responsibility in terms of who and what is conveyed. So the circumstances
at the time very much determine whether paint is carried as there is a big
difference between a small can of water based gloss and 5 litres of mat
silk. In general it is advisable to avoid carrying such substances on buses
as spillages can create many problems.

In terms of our regulations, we would refer to page 23 of our conditions of
carriage, which states;

(a) Without prejudice to the provisions of this Condition luggage
accompanying passengers is carried at the absolute discretion of the
conductor of the vehicle upon which it is proposed that the luggage should
be carried.
(b) Luggage accompanying passengers shall be carried in the place and
manner directed by the conductor and (without limitation) must not obstruct
any gangway in any vehicle, nor must it be placed on any seating space.
(c) The following items shall not be carried by xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
      (i) Explosive or combustible material of any type whatsoever;
(ii) (Without prejudice to (i) above) any article or substance which
would be reasonably expected to constitute a risk of injury to any person
on the vehicle or a risk of damage to the property of an person on the
vehicle or to the vehicle;
(iii) Any article of substance which causes or is likely to cause
annoyance to any person on the vehicle;
      (iv) Bicycles, perambulators.
      (v) Any individual item of luggage (excepting suitcases) weighing in
excess of 28lb.
(d) Accumulators and other types of lead/acid battery shall not be carried
unless securely sealed and shall at all times be carried on the floor of
the vehicle."

Whilst I understand this ruling may have caused some inconvenience, I hope
you can appreciate the reasons behind the ruling.

Thank you for contacting xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,"

Accordion players beware of rule c(v), and I am pleased to see that under
rule c(i) bodhrans and banjos should be prohibited. Saxophones less than
28lb seem to be acceptable but the reeds are made of combustible material so
would not be allowed.

Heh. So the next time Belfagan tries to hire a bus to transport a bunch of
morris dancers plus two accordion players and a sax player, we'll be
refused, will we?

Wouldn't surprise me at all.

Wooooowee. I'm surprised that you're allowed to take paint home in the
boot of a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine!!

Here, on the buses there is a space in the middle where the back door is, for prams with babies in and a seat that allows for one to
sit and hold the pram. The driver gets out of his seat, gets off the bus and helps lift the pram in. Otherwise there is a place
under the bus for other baggage. Paint? I don't know. It's up to the people in the 'paint' shop to knock the lid on with a hammer
for extra security and for people who buy paint to carry it in a paint/water proof bag. Not everyone can afford to pay for delivery.

This takes me back to my early days as an apprentice in the fens. We were
country chemists and sold everything including Cymag - a powdered cyanide
for gassing rabbits and rats in the sea banks. It came in 14lb tins. We
used to order it from a depot in Wisbech which was a good half an hours
journey from the shop. It came stacked under the stairs on the local bus! I
used to meet the bus with a set of wheels and push it through the town to
the shop. Happy days before all this H & S.

There's a couple of spaces on our buses to dock pushchairs securely, but not
prams. The bus suspension sinks down so that mums can bool them aboard.
Actually I don't think I've seen a traditional type pram for years. Our
drivers stay locked in behind their security screens. If they got out to
help someone with a pushchair it would give the passengers a chance to pinch
the bus.

The paint cost £4.99 for 5 litres, and the taxi home cost a fiver. If I'd
ordered the paint on the net I'd have only paid £4.99 for delivery.

:))) That's England for you. Best the driver takes the key with him. It's sad that it's come to drivers having security screens.

There are still people who can't afford a taxi and certainly don't have a computer, Keith.

I find this anti-paint carriage rule to be discriminatory against people
without vehicles (and ones who choose not to own them). Not only is the
safety issue over-blown to the point of sillyness but they've completely
lost sight of the purpose of public transportation. They should not be
allowed to encourage the use of public transport at the same time as making
it useless.

I think perhaps you should've gone back to the paint shop,
and told them the problem: perhaps even asked for a refund.

Hi

I have just remembered a bus related incident I was "involved" in some
years ago when I once lived in Millom.

I caught what we used to call the "midnight special" bus at Foxfield
to head back home from the Prince of Wales - it arrived in Millom just
past midnight, hence the name.

As we turned on(to) the A595 by the "High Cross" near Broughton, the
driver suddenly slammed on his brakes and jumped out of the bus. We
craned our necks to see what had happened and saw a cyclist lying in
the road. We at first thought the driver had hit him, but once the
driver had helped him on the bus (complete with bike) and we noticed
the cyclist still clutching his 10 pint carry-out, the penny dropped;
it was a drunk on his way home from the pub with a carry-out and he
had merely fallen off his bike and fallen asleep.

The bus driver sat him down, made sure he was uninjured, quickly
repaired the bike (the chain had come off) and set off again. The
cyclist then spent the next few minutes just sitting there muttering
drunken nonsense (no fare was paid by the way).

Half way to Millom, the driver suddenly stopped in the middle of
nowhere and put the bike plus cyclist off the bus.

As it was about this time of year we all remonstrated with the driver,
"You cruel sod, throwing him out here. It's perishing cold and he'll
die of exposure" etc.

"What do you mean?" said the driver; "I always put him off here. He
lives just at the bottom of that track".

Apparently it was a regular occurrence and just shows that there are
some humane bus drivers about - especially in the South of the County.

How did it go when you went through customs at Torp airport? Queue behind you?

That was a nice story, KGB. Funny too. When I was in Spain, I'd just bought a roll, was famished and thought I would eat it on the
last bus from Palma de Mallorca to Alcudia. The driver wouldn't let me on. I had to throw it away. Luckily enough there was a couple
who lived in Alcudia too and they took me with them in their taxi. I thopught I'd have to stay in the town all night, broke.

When father papered the parlour we couldn't see him for paste;
Dabbing it here, dabbing it there, paste and paper everywhere.
Mother was stuck to the ceiling, the children were stuck to the floor;
I neve knew a family that was so stuck up before.

There was a lot of queuing there, it's true. But I expect that at an
airport. I don't expect it at every damn bus stop in Edinburgh. (The only
place I ever use public transport these days.)

What? They wouldn't let you eat a roll on the bus? That's a bit much. Now if
you'd know about it beforehand, you could have just hidden it in your bag or
something, and sneaked it upstairs or in a corner somewhere that the driver
couldn't see you, and have eaten it in peace.

I think you're right, though I first came across it when my son was at
nursery school. One of the teachers specialised in teaching the kids some
great songs, this being one of them. In the end I bought a copy of the book
she got them from.

Would they have let you take it on to the bus if it was wrapped up in your
bag? And then you could have sat there with tummy rumbling, but you'd have
had it to eat when you disembarked at the other end.

Well you can sort of put up with it when you're embarking on a journey
that'll take several hours. Five or ten minutes down the road in a bus,
though - people wouldn't put up with it. (Might make people walk more, I
suppose.)

I think you'd be surprised what people would put up with. I'm not saying
I'm for it. Just that so many people (possibly not you) don't recognise
when their freedoms and rights are being infringed. They fall for the old
lies about their safety out of fear - that the governments instill in them
because it's useful.

There's a US news report out (can't remember which network) who is
advertising an upcoming report on americans arming and training themselves
to fight their own government. They are that afraid of everything nowadays.
GWB, and to a lesser extent his dad, have raised a culture of stupid people
who live in fear all the time. It's completely out of hand down there.

Sounds like it's a lot worse on your side of the pond. Unless those who live
in urban areas know different? I guess I'm a bit out of touch out here in
the wilds, though my frequent trips to the Scottish capital help to keep me
informed.

The traditional prams were on their last legs before my twenty-year-old
was newborn. I had one of those carry-car-seats for him (utterly
fabulous and a new, exciting discovery) and, once he'd outgrown his
sling for the bus, and could be propped in a buggy, I had a telescopic
McLaren buggy, which I could take on the train or bus.

Only disabled people get kneeling buses today!

Hear, hear!

There is very little respect and much contemptuous impatience for the
users of public transport. Buses are the worst. Forget it if you have
shopping! Or if you're a teacher bringing in boxes or cardboard rolls,
or an overnight bag!

Jp (a user of public transport, who grits her teeth on the bus every
morning and afternoon. They REALLY don't want ANYONE bringing anything
with them.....)

That reminds me of the time I mounted the bus with a window. My x who drank, had a fight with his mate and broke the window, silly
b....s and I was left with the job of getting it repaired. The bus conductor just laughed, for years after. I became the woman with
the window. He said aloud so everyone heard him, "Has your husband thrown you out and forgot to open the window first." Doh!

You know, one of my very, very, earliest memories is of the day my mum got
rid of my pram. In later years she insited I couldn't possibly have
remembered this, as I must have been only about 2 years old, but I do
remember it. I think she was giving it away to a local children's home or
something. I remember knowing I was too big for it, but being allowed to
ride in it one last time as she pushed it up along Greenhill Gardens. Big
coach-built pram of the old sort, it was. Maroon. I remember being quite
upset that she was getting rid of it - I'd obviously enjoyed being trundled
around in it. I liked the bumpety-bump feeling of going over cobbles - even
with the suspension you could still feel it.

Think of Latin America with goats and hens and geese sticking their heads out of the bus window.

Those memories go back a very deep and long way into our early days,
especially if we were talkers and could assign a few words into our
memories!

No, I was wondering why garlic isn't allowed on the list! Clearly, this
is indeed the land of the Free! Currently Garlic is permitted, if not
forbidden on the New York Subway, buses and at least the Long Island
Railroad (although not sure of the New Jersey and Connecticut rail
connections!)

Hi

Sung to the tune: "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean"

My uncle's a slum missionary,
He saves young ladies from sin,
He'll save you a blonde for a shilling,
My god, how the money rolls in.

Rolls in, rolls in,
My god how the money rolls in, rolls in,
Rolls in, rolls in,
My god how the money rolls in.

Regards (and there's more where that came from)

You'r only grey!!

My hair is a fine silvery white. Thin on top long at the back and the
sides, over my ears. But white very white. Not blond.

I decided to grow old gracefully! No Grecian Camouflage for me.
Although after a week in the Irish peat bogs, what's left of them, I look
older than my years.

If you spent a week in an Irish peat bog, you'd be a reddish brown.

I was a blonde toddler. I have the photos to prove it! But my hair had
turned dark brown before I was old enough to remember about it.

I was a blond child, too, as was my sister, so was my husband (according
to his photos) and both my children.I think we share this with half the
population of northern Europe. My son is the only one of us whose adult
hair didn't come in light brown once he started to lose his baby teeth.
He is proud of his blond hair and I remember his consternation at the
arrival of a solitary brown eyebrow hair in his mid-teens.

My godson was blond right into his teens, and then gradually started going
brown - apart from one patch in the middle of the back of his head, which,
so far as I know (and he's in his mid-30s now) stayed resolutely blond. (He
has his hair cut very short at the moment, plus he always seems to be in
some far-flung part of the world, so I haven't actually seen the back of his
head for several years!)

My daughter has tro crowns, had black hair when she was born, that turned to brown,

Oncw Orly's brother painted their dog green.

I'm red haired - granted a bit faded with wear these days? - my first wife
was very blonde. Both daughters are strawberry blonde but my granddaughter
is a gorgeous red head; keeping the tradition going.

My granny's granny was a redhead, and apparently each time my granny was
pregnant (4 times, but only 2 survived - it was tough having babies in India
in the early part of the 20th century) she hoped for a redheaded baby. None
of them were. I was her only grandchild, and although I know she loved me to
bits I think she was secretly disappointed that I didn't have red hair
either. But it's a recessive gene, isn't it? Were your parents redheaded,
Rex?

It is a recessive gene, Ally. You have to have red hair genes in both
families before it reappears. My son in law is a Stuart - one of your
countrymen, and he has brown/red hair - probably scottish viking descent -
Rebecca, my granddaughter, is a definite red head with blue eyes and
freckles to match, much as I was before the hair became salt as well as
pepper! My father was the same colour as myself. My mother was a brunette.
My sister and her daughter both have fiery red hair, her son doesn't. It
keeps cropping up.

Rex.
