GF's little place on the web
Surviving a major data loss.
Sunday, October 18, 2009 at 12:02 pm

I’ve been uum-ing and aah-ing about whether or not to write anything
about this, or wait until the new year when all the dust blows over and
I can finally tell all.

Suffice it to say, that in this day and age it is increasingly common
for child custody cases to take a sinister turn, by this I mean that it
is increasingly prevalent that allegations will be made regarding such
things as Domestic Violence, and Pornography, these are the WMD of the
modern age in Family courts.

As you will all know I have been using computers since the year dot, as
you are all also unavoidably aware, my home server based on a Cobalt RAQ
has been offline since early July (2009) which is to say the least very
unusual for someone as IT savvy as myself.

Even a major hardware or data loss might account for it GOING offline,
but it would not account for it STAYING offline, hardware is replaceable
and the old blog on said server often mentioned the importance of
regular backups that were then tested to work.

The fact is that the one form of data loss that I did not consider as a
realistic possibility was the (temporary) total loss of all my computers
and data, and indeed "premises"

There are several scenarios that can account for such a total outage,
the obvious ones are a fire and the subsequent effects of water
everywhere, there is also the rather obvious theft, but the fact is, I
could have survived either of these, data wise… I not only had redundant
hardware and many backups, I also had semi offsite backups in separate
buildings at my old "premises".

The one thing that I simply did not consider, even as a remote
possibility like fire or theft, which you think about, check your
security, and dismiss, was a possibility that literally did not occur to
me at all.

This seemed to me to be as remote as terrorists hijacking a 747 and
deliberately crashing it into your home, sure, that really will wipe
everything out, but it is so freakish there is no way such a possibility
will ever occur to you prior to the event.

So, anyway, I suffered a freakish and non predictable "data loss", all
my computers, all my data, all my backups, everything, is unavailable to
me at this time, and will remain so for some time yet.

It isn’t just stuff like all your digital still and movie images which
of course contains all your family photos, it isn’t just all your copies
of Operating Systems and Application Software, it isn’t just archives of
projects you have worked on, it is also the last decade of emails,
correspondence, documents and data.

This latter part is what really messes up your day, apart from the quite
ordinary stuff like records of car insurance renwal dates and online
banking details, which can be anything from a minor annoyance to a major
inconvenience, what really, really, really messes up your day is the
fact that said data essentially comprises a sort of electronic diary and
historical record of what you have been doing day by day.

OK, if your house burns down or Al Gebra crash a 747 into it, it is most
unlikely you will need to know what you were doing on some particular
date a few years ago, but there are some circumstances when you could
seriously use access to said data, and you can’t get at it.

And so, here is my message to you.

    1. Sort out your really ESSENTIAL data, eg family photos,
correspondence, emails, etc.
    2. Categorise them, and from each category create an archive, rar,
zip, tar, whatever, but nothing too fancy, nothing you cannot freely get
the unarchiving tools for.
If you feel the need, encrypt these archives.
    3. Place at least two copies of each of these archives in physically
remote locations, perhaps one on a cheap, large footprint hosting
service such as Servage, and one rsynced or P2P or Nullsoft Waste or a
private Torrent, to a friend’s computer (you can do the same for them,
ideally create a pool of 4 or more of you, all holding copies.)
    4. DO NOT TELL ANYONE (except the friend holding copies) that these
backups exist.
    5. DO NOT TELL ANYONE if you hold backups for friends.

"Anyone" MEANS anyone, no fucking exceptions, especially not those who
are "near and dear" to you.

Then, when Bruce Willis fails to divert the comet from striking your
house, you will be able to get access to everything that is important,
after you beg, borrow or steal a laptop.

Depending on circumstances, this may literally make the difference
between surviving, and not surviving (and I do not use that word in a
data sense) a major data loss. If you do not do this today, you are a
complete bloody fool.

You have been warned.

You probably will not be as lucky as me, and when I can tell my story,
only then will you appreciate just how massive a part luck (or karma, or
divine intervention, if you prefer) played in my surviving a major data
loss.

DO NOT be tempted to think of this advice as putting on a parachute when
you board a plane, just in case.

A far, far, far better analogy is look and listen before you cross a
road. You may THINK you are already, but trust me, unless you have a
real, accessible, secret, dependable offsite backup strategy in place,
you are not.

For the record I am unable to offer such a thing to my friends and
associates at this time, so please do not ask me, yet.

Have phun.

Or your credit card gets stolen and used on a porn site which is later
raided by the police.

Bunt claims to have never had a credit card so that is one defence he is
fucked for.

A condition of bail is that John Bunt does not go near the teenage queen
or the kid.

Her relatives are a little upset about her being attacked to say the least.

Very very deep shit (with blood) is forecast.

I do hope that the young lady has access to John Bunts previous posts
where he was boasting of selling drugs which he bought from bent coppers
and his plans to cause explosions.

Then there was the little matter of him threatening a guy with an hammer
over a parking issue not to mention his liking for underage girls.
'PHWOARRRRRRR!' indeed eh Johnny?

I'm sure this will do his 'custody battle' no end of good!

Now let's just find an address for Exeter Social Services who will no
doubt already be involved and the paperwork/exhibits can start rolling
in to them.

Oh, I forgot they already know John Bunt. He was admonished by them for
his sexual antics of playing 'smackybums' with a child.

It would actually be worth sending social services copies of buntys
posts on here, as well as a synopsis of the court case where one of
his claims was that he was in actual fact impotent, as a result of
hancox's usenet attacks against him.

The court case is certainly representative of the fact that bunty is
deeply dishonest, and also perhaps deserves to be sectioned rather
than be entrusted with the welfare of a young
child.....................
