Damn it - I was *in* Sainsbury's this morning, and MW2 was nowhere to be
seen. A trip at lunch might be in order, methinks.

My local Sainsburys probably won't have it for another week or so. They
seem to have about 4 Xbox games on sale at any one time. It took them ages
to stock ODST for example.

Yes, but which is better PS3 or 360?

I've not got a Gold sub so the PS3 would seem a better option, but I'd
like to know of any plus/minus point of each platform. I guess I could
buy both then sell one on.

Was deciding which platform to get and decided on the PC! Was probably
a good idea as suggestions are the console versions are not UK!

Got mine from a local 24 hour asda at quarter to six this morning. 32
quid. I'd be surprised if they have any copies left by half six. They
had about 40 copies originally, with more than half sold already.
There was a queue about 5 deep.. Good luck.

Bought. There was a surprising queue at the Halifax Sainsbury's,
including a bunch of fifty-somethings attempting to buy multiple copies
- clearly for eBay.

Also amusing was the number of people in the queue wearing school
uniform. IT'S AN EIGHTEEN, FFS!

at around 7.50

I had a quick go of Team Deathmatch before coming to work got to a LVL2
Roll on this evening.

That was *supposed* to be the case at the Halifax branch. Selectively
applied, though: some staff were saying one copy in toto, others were
saying one copy per format, others allowing multiple copies - I saw
someone leave with four.

And there was me wondering why the Halifax would be selling MW2 games at
all for a minute! :-)

25 quid in Tesco near Cambridge. Despite being thoroughly unfussed by it, I
was willing to pay that much. Unfortunately they'd sold out of the 360
version, despite having dozens of copies of the PS3 version lining the
shelves.
Might stop at Asda for a quick look on the way home tonight, but 25 quid is
close to the maximum I'd be willing to pay.

I am sure you can stretch to another quid.
I am hoping that they have similar offers next week for Creed 2 & Lego Jones
2 (That's all the games I'm buying this year)

I did that at the weekend too, found myself looking at the PS3 and then
realised I don't have any desire to own one. It was just the price, but
when I thought about it, even that's not great! It's still more
expensive than the 360!

To bring it back OT, MW2 has 5 hours of game play for an RRP of £55... WTF!

I find it hard to switch on the 360 these days. If it wasn't for Gay
Tony it would be a lot harder. PS3 certainly sucked all the love this
family has out of the 360 and even the Wii. Roll on Christmas when we'll
have a cross-console selection of goodies. Until then, LittleBigPlanet
is _the_ most played game in this house since... well, possibly ever.

I ordered Assassin's Creed 2 on 360 mainly because I know I'll have
little chance to play it if it was on PS3. And Uncharted 2 will be
occupying that PS3 space between kids' bedtime and mine for a while.

I'd never have thought it a few months ago, but honestly the PS3 is my
favourite console ever. I'm even using some of the 'media centre'
features in it.

I don't intend to, it's the mere fact they feel that price is a fair
reflection of the content. Thousands of copies will be sold to people
without Xbox Live, in what way are they getting any value for money?

They aren't, FIVE HOURS of game play for £55! That's £11 an hour! From
what I've heard it's a very lazy campaign as well with a very poor plot.
Seems like it's an after thought to me, so why bother at all? Because if
they don't bolt on a single player mode they will lose millions of
sales. Even people buying it for MP could turn away without a SP mission.

There is no reason they couldn't have spent time and money on a good
single player experience. The money they will make was never in any
doubt and they didn't have a lot to do to improve on the first one.
There could easily have been an involving game here but they just
couldn't be bothered, instead just using it to make as much profit as
possible.

Well it's just as long as COD4 from what I can tell...I can't comment
on any any other in the franchise as I've not played them.

Is that 5 Hours for the Single Player campaign?

On top of that there is the co-op mode & then many many hours on multiplayer
online

Depends if you're a completionist. I'll be doing:

SP on normal to enjoy the game - 6 hours
SP on veteran for the achievements - 12 hours
SP on easy to get the intel items - 4 hours

Plus 23 spec-op missions on co-op on veteran to get the 1k, no idea how
long that will take, but probably at least 10 hours.

So it's all very well saying achievements are silly and pointless and
I'm a whore (which I am!), but by them being there and thus setting me
extra goals, I would get 6 times more game at least from this as you
would without even touching the multiplayer. Cost me £30, so that's a
pound an hour, assuming I never bother with multiplayer. All things
considered, that's damn good value.

As someone who doesn't play games much anymore I'm actually glad that the
story mode is only 5 hours. It'll make having a complete experience while
borrowing/hiring that much easier.

I reckon all games should be made this way.

Quite. If you only intend to play through a short, single-player game
once, then rent it. Seems fairly obvious to me.

No, that's just playing the same game three times. How about the next
time a film studio make a movie it's only 30 minutes long. However
they'll show it three times back to back, once in black and white, again
with colour and a final time with the sound?

Adding in achievements for repetition != additional hours of game play.
They are silly and pointless and an excuse for lazy and cheap game design.

yes, but you can finish Sonic the Hedgehog in about 30 minutes.

that cost me £40 back in 1991.

it didn't have achievements, but i still played it through a
ridiculous number of times.

i'll admit, the SP side of MW2 does appear like it'll be on the short
side, but it isn't a game designed to just be played through once, as
Zo says.

yes, several games do exist that don't offer any real incentive to
play through them again, but tbh a short campaign doesn't necessarily
mean it's a bad thing if there is a lot of replay value to be had
also.

if it was a standard SP game, 5 hours long, with nothing else to it to
compel you to play it, then yes i'd agree with you, but it's not.

can't believe i'm defending a game that just 24 hours ago i said i
wasn't arsed about buying lol

You have a point, BUT I would say that rushing through the single player
game on (presumably) a lower difficulty setting and complaining that it was
too short is almost equally invalid. Anyone who is familiar with the COD
series will know that the fun lies not in zooming through on Easy/Normal,
but in the challenge provided by Hardened/Veteran. I don't have the game,
and probably won't be buying it now that I've apparently missed out on the
early-bird bargains, but if I did, I would probably at least do the first
two items on Zo's agenda. Not for achievements, but because there's a lot of
sense in playing it that way. Whatever story there is, it would undoubtedly
be best appreciated in the rather more condensed timeframe that Normal
difficulty allows. Once that has been done, the obvious next step is to play
it again on Veteran to savour the set-piece combat situations on a properly
challenging difficulty.
There are lots of games I can think of where you can speed-complete the game
on easier difficulties but that have provided many hours of enjoyment beyond
that. Mirror's Edge, for example. I completed that about 5 and a half times,
and would have done so regardless of achievements (in fact I think at least
two of the run throughs *were* just for fun). Also the Halo games - I've
