Dreamcast 2 is on the way!!!!
"Sega has applied to trademark the name "Dreamcast," prompting
speculation that the company is pondering a return to the hardware business.
The application, which was filed in August, covers home consoles,
controllers, and "video game interactive controller, namely, hand held
pads, and floor pads or mats; joysticks for video games; computer cursor
control devices, namely, computer mouse; flash memory cards; video game
software, computer game programs."
This may be nothing more than an effort by Sega to protect the Dreamcast
brand, though apparently the original trademark filing for the name is
still active. It's interesting to note the differences between the two
filings, however, in particular the "floor pads or mats."

Ok, it's wishful thinking and will never happen, but reading it still
made my heart skip a little bit.
There is a nice little fantasy piece on the Dreamcast 2 here too:
http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9829092-1.html
It is my hope that the Dreamcast will eventually make a return of sorts
via a DLC service on the PS3 or 360 in the near future.

Yeah, because Sega suddenly found a few billions extra under the sofa
cushions and decided to single-handedly take on a market that is
completely covered top-to-bottom. That is far more likely than the
mundane fact that you have to periodically renew registration of
trademarks.

A shame you didn't read my post properly. If you had you would have
seen this part:
"Ok, it's wishful thinking and will never happen, but reading it still
made my heart skip a little bit."
My apologies for feeling a little nostalgic about a great console and
trying to spark a little bit of conversation.

Of course, if your sarcasm was just aimed at the original news report
and not at my for seemingly believing it, then fair enough. I agree
completely, it's a ludicrous assumption.

"Sure, it's outdated and the graphics on it are enough to make you vomit
when compared to today's offerings, but it has a nostalgic appeal that
begs us to be played."
Playing Soul Calibur on the DC last night I thought it looked absolutely
fine.

Yes, but you don't have any of 'today's offerings'! Whilst it's far
from vomit-inducing, as implied, Dreamcast could hold its own against
PS2, Cube and Xbox, even Shenmue and Soul Calibur don't exactly compare
to Gears and Heavenly Sword.

No, I don't have an Xbox 360 or a PS3 but I do have eyes, and can see out
my window. The graphics out there are pretty good out there.

I'd much rather play Shenmue or Soul Calibur over those two games though,
regardless of what looks best.

As would I, and Shenmue will forever be the greatest game ever made,
and SC is better than either of its sequels IMO, but that wasn't the
issue being discussed.

True, but graphics aren't everything.
Soul Calibur had far better gameplay IMHO, although I'll admit I've only
played the demo of Heavenly Sword.
I've also yet to find a game to match ShadowMan for sheer size of the map
and single-player expansiveness.
MInd you, I'm addicted to "Uncharted" on the PS3 at the moment, which is
seriously superb! :-)

Wasn't Shadowman an N64 port? I've never played it, but I find it hard
to believe a DC/N64 game is bigger than Oblivion, Mass Effect or San
Andreas.

Zomoniac enlightened us thusly:
[Snippety snip]
> Wasn't Shadowman an N64 port?
Not sure. I've seen versions on several different platforms.
> I've never played it, but I find it hard to believe a DC/N64 game is
> bigger than Oblivion, Mass Effect or San Andreas.
Oblivion is huge as it's pretty much free-ranging (I've got the PS3
version) but from what I've played of both games, ShadowMan is bigger in
terms of levels, but is more 'enclosed' (ie. it's more of a Tomb Raider
style, linear movement through different 'areas'). The two are quite
different games.
However, I think the onus these days is on multi-player play because many
games (especially first person shooters) seem to suffer from very small
single-player maps.
I remember playing Unreal and the first Half Life on the PC and they were
both pretty large, taking some time to complete. I then got Star Trek Elite
Force which was disappointing in it's shortness (I completed it in one
evening) although I preferred the online play.
I've just completed Call of Duty 4 in a couple of evenings and that also
has a very small single-player map, although again is good in multi-play.
Uncharted is definitely recommended though. It brings back memories of the
fun I had when the original Tomb Raider came out all those years ago and we
were all addicted to it. However, with Uncharted it also shows off the
power of the PS3 (with real-time drying of clothes which actually become
wet if you jump in the rivers, or undergrowth which actually moves when you
push your way through it, all with dappled lighting coming through the
canapy - ahhh lovely! :-))
