PDA especially for Tomtom: Palm or PocketPC?
Hello,

I already have a palm tungsten T5. Now I want to buy a 2nd PDA
dedicated to run Tomtom navigation. What do you recommend to use for a
PDA for this purpose?

Does Tomtom run better on Palm or PocketPC? If PocketPC, what would be
the best choice (price is also a factor) for this purpose? I don't
intend to use the 2nd PDA for much other than just GPS navigation.

Thanks,

Peter

A T5 will run tomtom no problem. You do not need a second unit. I am
currently running tomtom on a T3. You need the Tomtom navigator software
loaded on an SD card and a bluetooth GPS unit.

Tomtom runs on both. Prices are similar. The question should be what /else/
you wish to do with the PDA? In my perception, it is primarily about
addressing the fork: "do you just need to get your work done (pragmatic) or
watch a little show that costs in terms of battery life".

Hope it helps,

Roy

OK I'm convinced, thanks for your advice. I'll use my T5 also for
navigation and not buy new hardware, only tomtom software + GPS
receiver.

Don't give up on the idea of a second PDA for GPS, just make sure it's
one that you can use as your main PDA. I bought a spare T3 with
tomtom gear on ebay for £120.

If you use your T5 a lot and would prefer not to be without it,
consider buying a similar machine second-hand and using it for satnav.
If your T5 breaks or gets stolen, you then have a readily available
spare. I have two T3s, one in my pocket, the other in the car. Using
it in the car ensures that it gets use and so prevents the battery
from being ruined through lack of use.

I have tomtom on both machines, so I can use my pocket machine to look
up addresses, check journey times etc, and I have the spare machine in
my main car connected to a wired serial GPS and a powered, fixed
cradle. In my other rarely used car I have a tomtom suction cradle
and tomtom bluetooth GPS, and when in that car I use my main pocket
PDA for navigation. I can transfer this setup to any hire cars I
might be using.

Glad to have had some minor impact... *smile*

Either you are gadget-savvy or you are very wealthy. I always discourage
friends from 'fragmentation' to multiple devices such as cellular and PDA
(or PDA/laptop, laptop/desktop unless closely-networked). Address book in
one hand and the dial on another, for example, is a classic. *smile*

Best wishes,

Roy

I'm gadget-savvy and *gadget-dependant*, rather than wealthy... Not
entirely dependent of course, but I make such good use of my PDA that
I always like to have a spare, given the prices second-hand you don't
have to be loaded to have a backup. You don't even need the identical
kit that you've already got, an earlier or lower model will do as long
as it's got the basics that you use. For me that's to-do lists,
calendar, memos, keyring, and sat-nav.

Personally I prefer to depend as little on one thing as possible, that
wasn't possible with the PDA as it's so damned useful so instead I
make sure I have a backup. Given that it's there, I might as well use
it, hence the double-satnav setup. I also have more than one car and
use hire cars from time to time so my old satnav was a PITA as it's
wired and needs a rats-nest of cables, hence the bluetooth backup that
can be moved to another car.

Re: PDA especially for Tomtom: Palm or PocketPC?
You need a kit like this one which contains the software on an SD card and
the GPS unit like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TomTom-Navigator-5-Software-TomTom-Bluetooth-GPS-NEW_W0QQitemZ5873500805QQcategoryZ64371QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
You need a palm sync cable in the cigarette lighter socket to keep the palm
charged, like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-Sync-Cable-Car-Charger-for-Palm-Tungsten-TX-T5_W0QQitemZ5873196688QQcategoryZ48674QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
You also need a holder for the T5.

I'm not sure i see the point in combined devices - it's £145 or over
for the tomtom kit from the looks of things. plus you probably have a
battery in the gps that also needs charging or a cable. You can buy a
Garmin I3 for the same money and should be able to pick up the tom tom
units that are just about to be replaced for less than £200 pretty
soon.
