Cecil B de iMac
This afternoon, went to Peter Jones to buy towels, but of course I swung
by the shinies. And saw a 27" iMac.

Holy shit! If I got one of those, I'd need to buy a bigger house.

However I am tempted [1] by the new iMacs, because they would be so much
faster than my 18" iG5; on Anne's 2.4GHz Core 2 duo MBP, things like
Street View are just so much more *fluid*. This is on the same
connection; it's nothing to do with the data rate. But it'd have to be a
21", failing anything smaller. Is there a big difference between the
performance of the two on offer- I wouldn't need the extra HD space, but
would the graphics cards make much of a difference? I don't play
games...

[1] But not to the extent of actually buying one...

Nice electronic touch; our bus on the way back was one of the hybrids
that TfL are putting into service. The diesel in the back hums away at
constant speed (or just idles when not needed) and the bus wafts along
smoothly to the whistle of choppers in the back. Sod the carbon savings,
it's the *quiet* I like.

If you don't play games, the answer to this question is /almost/
always "no".

If you're into large photos, or heavily multicore software that can
also take advantage of GPUs, then it will make a difference.

How much of Snow Leopard uses OpenCL? QuickTime H.264 decoding is
accelerated on certain GPUs as well.

I saw one of those in John Lewis' whem up in Edinburgh. Went looking for
a Magic Mouse (no joy)[0] and saw one of the 27" iMacs up close.

Some time passed. I may have drooled, slightly.

Jim
[0] so I'm ordering one of the buggers from Apple directly. Should be
here midweek, methinks.

Hope you a right - we are still waiting for ours and we ordered it a couple of
days after the anouncement.

They have them in abundance down here. You can even buy them in PCWorld
if you wanted to.

The Apple Store in Regents Street had loads of them. Curiously, the
Computer Exchange shop (or whatever they call themselves now) on Camden
High St had a few on display today.

As of last night I have a "it's been shipped" message, so I'm thinking
Wednesday or Thursday.

I'm going to be _so_ disappointed when I get it...
